Report: Industry decides food ingredient safety (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Thousands of ingredients that go into food have been classified as safe by private industry alone, without any government oversight, according to a new report published Wednesday.

Since the early 1960's, private companies and industry trade associations have determined at least 3,000 ingredients are safe, with no federal scrutiny, the study found. The ingredients include everything from artificially synthesized chemicals used in chewing gum to grape seed extract used in cheese and instant coffee.

The peer-reviewed report published in the Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety journal draws on research funded by the Pew Health Group, the health and consumer safety arm of the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association says the industry only classifies ingredients as safe after a battery of rigorous biological tests but agrees that more transparency in the vetting process would help build consumer confidence.

"The system is less transparent than it should be so we're looking to open that dialogue," said Leon Bruner, the association's chief science officer, who agreed the study's estimates were reasonable. "We are completely comfortable with increasingly the transparency or the visibility of ingredients that go through the process."

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act makes food manufacturers responsible for ensuring food ingredients are safe. Companies can classify an ingredient as "generally recognized as safe" for use in a specific product but aren't required to tell the Food and Drug Administration about what they find. Some do, through a voluntary notification program that gives the Food and Drug Administration a chance to review the findings.

Israel sending aid to Turkey after earthquake (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israel's defense minister says Israel will help Turkey aid earthquake victims "as soon as possible," after Turkey accepted Israel's offer of assistance.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement Tuesday that "special aid" will be sent to Turkey. He did not elaborate.

A ministry spokesman said Turkey asked for emergency housing units, and Israel was checking what else it could do. There was no immediate comment from Turkey.

The two countries were once close allies, but Turkey has shifted to seeking a wider Mideast role while harshly criticizing Israel.

Israel offered aid just after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday, killing hundreds.

Israel often sends rescue teams to world earthquake sites. In 1999, Israeli teams helped dig people out of the rubble after a huge earthquake hit Turkey.

A new iteration of the DroidKungFu Android Trojan has been uncovered, presented as a legitimate app update in order to sneak its way onto your Android phone. It uses a new exploit to gain access to devices. First brought to light by Lookout Mobile Security last week, this new variant, which Lookout calls LeNa, uses social engineering to trick users into giving the installer super-user access on devices. Once deployed, the malware attaches itself to a native system process.

Lookout for Android tablets

Malware threatens the security of end users with cunning agility, as the booming mobile landscape presents an alluring challenge for attackers. The unique environment mobile devices offer can blindside an end user, but it also encourages very specific solutions from dedicated companies, including Lookout.

Just a few days after launching its first security app for iOS, Lookout expanded its Android offering to include tablets. Lookout recognized the security threats for Android very early on, and now they turn to tablets to offer protection and ?find my phone? capabilities for Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, as well as Wi-Fi-only devices.

Southern Virginia University lifted the lockdown at 5:30 a.m. Monday after police and K-9 bomb squad dogs searched and cleared buildings at the school in Buena Vista.

The school says on its website that a bomb threat was called in to the college around 10 p.m. Sunday. Students were notified of the threat via email and text message.

Students were allowed to return to residence halls around 3:45 a.m. Monday.

University officials say they believe campus is secure, but reminded students to report anything suspicious. Classes will resume Monday morning.

The private, 750-student liberal arts college embraces the values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

US residents say Hawaii's coral reef ecosystems worth $33.57 billion per year

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2011) ? A peer-reviewed study commissioned by NOAA shows the American people assign an estimated total economic value of $33.57 billion for the coral reefs of the main Hawaiian Islands.

"The study shows that people from across the United States treasure Hawaii's coral reefs, even though many never get to visit them," said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "It illustrates the economic value of coral reefs to all Americans, and how important it is to conserve these ecosystems for future generations."

"We are pleased that research is being done to look at the value of Hawaii's coral reefs, but before we consider any potential applications of the study we will consult closely with local communities," said William J. Aila, Jr., chairperson of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The study employed a scientifically developed national Internet survey of more than 3,200 households -- a representative sample of all U.S. residents, not just Hawaii or coastal residents. From June through October 2009, the survey allowed the public to express its preferences and values for protection and restoration of the coral reef ecosystems around the main Hawaiian Islands. In this study, total economic value includes so-called passive use values, such as the willingness to pay to protect the coral reef ecosystem for future generations, as well as direct use values, such as snorkeling over a coral reef or consuming fish supported by coral reef ecosystems.

A panel of independent university and private scientists, from both Hawaii and the continental U.S., provided facts to the survey design team about the Hawaiian coral reef ecosystems and provided estimates of how the coral reef ecosystems would change in response to the two possible management options. The descriptions, including illustrations, of improvement to coral ecosystems gave survey respondents a clear understanding of what they were being asked to value and how the ecosystems would change as a result of the protection measures.

To estimate underlying values the public places on coral reef ecosystems, the study team presented survey participants with two specific measures to protect and restore coral reef ecosystems. One measure aimed at reducing effects to coral ecosystems from fishing, and another to repair reefs damaged by ships.

The main Hawaiian Islands consist of eight volcanic islands that range in age from active lava flows on the east side of the Big Island to seven million-year-old Kauai. Despite their economic significance, reefs near urbanized areas, such as Honolulu, Wailuku, and Kahului, have experienced increasing stress from ever-increasing population and other pressures.

The national survey was funded by NOAA and the National Science Foundation, and was designed to address the issue of Internet bias. The survey was conducted through two Internet panels; one recruited participants using controlled random digit dialing telephone surveys and the other using standard U.S. Bureau of the Census methods of randomly selecting households and going to each household to recruit participants via face-to-face interviewing.

Tim Tebow boosts ticket sales for Miami vs. Broncos: two of the NFL's worst teams. Is there anything Tim Tebow can't sell?

He may be playing for the opposing team this weekend, but Tim Tebow is scoring big for the Miami Dolphins in terms of ticket sales.

Since being named the Denver Broncos? starting quarterback last week, replacing a struggling Kyle Orton, Tebow has helped the Dolphins sell an additional 10,000 tickets to Sunday?s game against the Broncos. The former University of Florida Gator and native Floridian is a beloved legend in his home state, and thousands of Gator fans are expected to make the five-hour drive from Gainesville to Miami to support their hometown hero.

"The demand and interest in the game certainly has picked up since the announcement," Dolphins CEO Mike Dee told the Associated Press on Wednesday. "Clearly this matchup and the buzz that's out there have helped with tickets."

Tebow?s start, which, strangely, coincides with a celebration of his own 2008 National Championship-winning Gator team, means there will be a higher number of non-Dolphins fans in the crowd than usual. Financially, however, that?s welcome news for the home team. The struggling Dolphins have managed to sell enough tickets to avoid local TV blackouts since 2003, but the team?s dismal record over the past few years has resulted in declining ticket sales and apathy among fans.

The Dolphins have lost 11 of their last 12 home games and are 0 and 5 for the current season.

The Broncos, for their part, aren?t doing a whole lot better at 1 and 4. But for his legions of fans, particularly in Florida, Tebow joining the mix turns a matchup between two of the NFL?s worst teams into a can?t-miss event.

Mr. Dee insisted that Sunday?s game wasn?t ?Tim Tebow Day,? but given the surging interest and the Heisman trophy winner's proven track record as a moneymaker, it?s hard to believe that Florida spectators and viewers will agree.

Since Tebow entered the NFL as the 25^th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, his marketing power has far outpaced his actual performance as a football player. During the 2010 draft weekend, Tebow rookie jerseys outsold every other rookie and current player, surpassing the sales record set by Mark Sanchez jerseys in 2009. Between April 1 and June 30 of that year, Tebow jerseys outsold those of every other NFL player, including marquee quarterbacks Donovan McNabb, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, and Brett Farve.

Despite playing in six games last season, mostly as a backup, Tebow has endorsement deals with Nike, Jockey, and EA Sports. His 2011 memoir ?Through My Eyes,? co-written with Nathan Whitaker, reached No. 22 on Amazon.com?s bestseller list.

According to the Davie Brown index, a tool popular with advertisers who use it to quantify the selling power of various celebrities, Tebow is the seventh most appealing NFL player currently active. Five of the six players ahead of him (Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, and Michael Vick) are franchise quarterbacks ? not second-year players fighting for a starting spot.

And in Florida, at least, some think the Tebow love might be great enough to save an NFL football team. As the 2010 draft approached, then-Florida Gov. Charlie Crist told reporters that the Jacksonville Jaguars, struggling with record low attendance and rumors of an eventual relocation to Los Angleles, might be helped by drafting local boy Tebow. ?I?ve actually talked to the ownership about that. I think it?d be great,? Governor Crist said.

Baylor favored to win Big 12 (AP)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has a top team, a top player and a gnawing pet peeve in the form of Texas A&M.

Texas A&M, the defending national champion, is leaving the Big 12 after this season. Leaving behind storied rivalries that date back generations, the Aggies are joining the Southeastern Conference in a move that may be soon be duplicated by Missouri, another charter member of the Big 12.

Asked if she would schedule Texas A&M in a non-conference game, Mulkey recalled that A&M president R. Bowen Loftin has likened the action to a divorce. She then pulled no punches in noting that she's had personal experience with the breakup of a marriage.

"My feeling is this," Mulkey said Wednesday during the Big 12's media day. "If a man wants to divorce me and says our relationship has no value to him, and then he asks me if he can sleep with me, the answer is, `No!'"

Kansas coaches have also said they would not want to schedule archrival Missouri if the Tigers leave the Big 12. Aggies coach Gary Blair says the pain of rejection is not the only factor involved.

"I understand the feelings of everybody," Blair said. "A lot of it, not playing, it could be said, is about recruiting. Throw all that other hogwash out the window. It's about recruiting. My phone number hasn't changed. I'll play anybody any time."

But Blair, whose Aggies beat Notre Dame last year in the championship game, said scheduling "takes two to dance."

"I'm not going to get in and be the wordsmith with Kim on how she feels," he said.

A year ago following the departure of Nebraska and Colorado, Texas A&M helped hold the Big 12 together by agreeing with other big-time football powers to stick it out. Now the Aggies are getting ready for their Big 12 farewell tour.

"Last year, everybody loved us," Blair said. "This year everybody says we're the villain. But I'm not going into that because (realignment) is all about football. It has nothing to do with women's basketball or equestrian or anything else. It's about football. It's about television sets, money, and it's about egos."

Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson agreed.

"And I'm not sure ego is No. 3," she said.

One thing Mulkey's Lady Bears will be counting on from the Aggies this season is motivation.

After beating Texas A&M three times last year, the old rivals met for a fourth time in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament and the Lady Bears were ousted 58-46. Mulkey wasn't happy about the NCAA's decision to put her top-seeded team in the same bracket with its Big 12 foe, and she even drew a public reprimand from the NCAA for her comments.

Now comes this year's version of the Lady Bears, who were picked to win the Big 12 and will have four starters back, including 6-8 junior Brittney Griner.

"I don't know that I'll have to say a lot," Mulkey said. "I think when you have a goal to win a national championship and you don't reach that goal, that if you're any kind of a competitor, the hunger should be there. I don't imagine that I'm going to have to do a lot of motivating to remind them that isn't it sad when a 34-3 record is not good enough."

All Griner did last year was average 23 points and 7.8 rebounds while leading the nation with 170 blocked shots.

She has impacted the Big 12 in many ways.

"I think the whole league went out and tried to find somebody that could defend her and slow her down a little bit," said Oklahoma State coach Kurt Budke. "But she changed the game. She changed how you attack Baylor because you know, offensive rebounding against Baylor and there she is and you don't get any put-backs against them."

Texas A&M lost standout Danielle Adams, but returns three starters and was picked runner-up in the preseason poll.

"We're looking forward to defending the national championship," Blair said.

No. 3 in the league's preseason poll is Texas, with four returning starters from last year's 19-14 team, including seniors Ashley Gayle, Yvonne Anderson and Ashleigh Fontenette. Also back is 5-10 sophomore Chassidy Fussell, who averaged more than 16 points as a freshman.

Oklahoma, picked No. 4, will see the return of Whitney Hand, who tore an ACL in November 2009.

"I can tell you that she has healed. She is moving well. She looks much more like the Whitney Hand you saw as a true freshman," coach Sherri Coale said. "I don't know if any of us realized the pain she was in last year. What I see now is a kid who is really comfortable in her own skin as a basketball player. Having her back and healthy is a huge breath of fresh air for everyone."

Iowa State was No. 5 in the preseason poll, followed by Texas Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Missouri.

Henrickson could have her best Kansas team yet, led by a player-of-the-year candidate in 6-3 junior Carolyn Davis, who averaged 19 points last year.

"If you look at her numbers, you'd think she must get twice as many shots as anybody else," said Henrickson. "But when you shoot it as well as she does, it doesn't take as many to put up big numbers for her."

If Missouri also heads off to the SEC, it could spell the end of another old and colorful rivalry with Kansas. Henrickson said she would agree with Kansas men's coach Bill Self, who has said he would not schedule the Tigers if they leave.

"Our rivalry belongs in the Big 12," she said.

Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly, who is being treated for a cancerous lesion on his vocal cords, did not attend the media day.

"He still talks and he still yells," Iowa State sophomore Hallie Christofferson said with a grin. "But he uses a microphone and just gets everybody else going."

Coale said she's been in almost daily contact with the 16-year Iowa State coach.

"He's doing well," she said. "He's a fighter by nature. He gets irritated that he can't do everything. But optimistic, upbeat ? That's him. That's who he is."

Chris Brown is up for the most nominations at the Soul Train Awards with five nods. Following closely behind are "Party" and "Lift Off" collaborators Beyoncé and Kanye West with five nominations each. Also making a strong showing in the nominations are Kelly Rowland and Adele, who nabbed three nods apiece.

Brown is up for Best Male R&B/Soul Artist against Trey Songz, Cee Lo Green, R. Kelly, Eric Benet and Miguel, as well as Album of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Song of the Year ("Look at Me Now"), where he faces off against West ("All of the Lights"), Nicki Minaj ("Moment for Life"), Lupe Fiasco ("Out of My Head") and Jay-Z and Kanye West ("Otis").

West landed two more nods for Song of the Year ("All of the Lights") as well as Album of the Year for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, alongside Trey Songz ( Passion Pain & Pleasure), Adele (21), Chris Brown (F.A.M.E.), Jill Scott (Light of the Sun), Beyoncé (4) and his joint LP with Jay-Z ( Watch The Throne).

Beyoncé also landed nominations in Record of the Year ("Best Thing I Never Had"), Best Dance Performance ("Run the World (Girls)") and Best Female R&B/Soul Artist. Fellow former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland is also nominated.

The show tapes November 17 in Atlanta and will premiere on CENTRIC and BET on November 27. Cedric "The Entertainer" has been tapped to host, and Jill Scott, Mindless Behavior, Robin Thicke, Lloyd, Miguel, Melanie Fiona and Keith Sweat will be among the performers taking the stage.

Building A Business Around Frenemies | Fast Company

This blog is written by a member of our expert blogging community and expresses that expert's views alone.

I wrote a few months ago about how cloud companies are in a unique position to make partners of their competitors, a phenomenon I call the ?Frenemy Model.? I?m still holding strong to this theory, even as there have been a number of massive developments in the industry since I wrote the first piece.

For example, when iCloud was first announced, many claimed that it would kill off startups that were focused on cloud storage. OfficeDrop was in the crosshairs of that speculation since we have a cloud storage offering, but I refuse to believe that we?ll be squashed by Apple. Or Box. Or Dropbox, for that matter. In fact, we make our app stronger by connecting to Dropbox, and I?d invite connections to iCloud or Box if our users demand it.

The core of the frenemy theory is this: The very nature of the cloud is collaborative, and users don?t want to be hamstrung by a certain service. If your company chooses to make other cloud services work well together, you?re going to attract a loyal user base.

Cloud storage isn?t anything new. It?s becoming a commodity. There are established services people use and can?t live without. Startups can?t be in denial of this fact, or risk obsolescence.

But it goes a level further than just playing nice with others. We can associate 40% of our revenue with our frenemy partners. This includes not only connecting with competitive services but also empowering the competition by licensing our software, essentially creating more competition for our apps. Having witnessed some pretty serious intellectual property wars in the past 5-10 years, I?d call this strategy ?anti-proprietary.?

Why risk everything to build a frenemy network when existing in isolation seems so much more appealing? It seems so counterintuitive, but makes so much sense because not many things built in isolation have ever really reached the mass market. Computers before the Internet were really contained to a small population of people. Now they?re pervasive enough that we have something called a digital divide--and it?s a big deal. Expensive enterprise software programs that aren?t compatible with others (I?m looking at you, Microsoft) are dying out in favor of more open, web-based platforms (like Google Apps).

Making money off of your frenemies is another story. You can?t be just another clone. For us, it was all about finding something that fits into people?s day-to-day work lives--the need to digitize paper--and making it function with most of the services they use. All too often companies overcomplicate what people really want. Steve Jobs was a genius at figuring this out and ushering in a new age of simplicity.

So maybe that?s it. The beginnings of the frenemy manifesto.

Keep it simple.

Don?t be selfish.

And remain open to the possibility that someone who could squash you might also be your biggest moneymaker.

BP, Anadarko settle Gulf disaster claims (AP)

LONDON ? Anadarko Petroleum Co. has agreed to pay $4 billion to BP PLC as part of a settlement related to last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

BP said Monday that Anadarko's payment will form part of the British company's $20 billion trust fund, which has paid out $7 billion so far to settle claims from individuals and businesses. Eleven workers were killed when the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded off Louisiana on April 20, 2010.

Anadarko held a 25 percent share in the Macondo well which blew out in April last year, causing the largest oil spill in U.S. history. Anadarko, based in The Woodlands, Texas, is also handing over its stake in the well to BP as part of the settlement.

The agreement also gives Anadarko a potential share in funds which BP recovers from third parties or insurance. If BP's total recovery exceeds $1.5 billion, Anadarko would get 12.5 percent of the excess, or up to $1 billion, BP said.

BP shares were up 4.3 percent at 434.3 pence in early trading on the London Stock Exchange.

In May, BP announced a settlement with the other partner in the well, MOEX Offshore 2007 LLC, which owned 10 percent of the well. It agreed to pay BP $1 billion.

Weatherford International Inc., a contractor based in Switzerland, also agreed in June to pay $75 million to the trust fund to settle claims between it and BP. Weatherford manufactured the float collar, designed to help contain cement, used in the blown-out well.

"This settlement represents a positive resolution of a significant uncertainty and it resolves the issues among all the leaseholders of the Macondo well," said BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley.

"There is clear progress with parties stepping forward to meet their obligations and help fund the economic and environmental restoration of the Gulf," Dudley said. "It's time for the contractors, including Transocean and Halliburton, to do the same."

BP is still embroiled in suits and countersuits with Transocean Ltd., operator of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, and Halliburton Co., which was responsible for cementing the well. The suits are scheduled to go to trial in New Orleans in February.

I can't remember the last time I even considered answering the question about the NFL's best player with any name other than Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. But, after watching Aaron Rodgers against the Broncos, there is a new name on top of my list.

Tom Brady was the unanimous MVP last year and I was one of the voters. But, as brilliant as Brady continues to be, Rodgers is the Super Bowl champion and is more mobile than Brady. Defensive coordinators have to play Rodgers the way they play Mike Vick -- he's that big of a dual threat.

Last week Rodgers set an NFL record with four touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. He made one poor decision the entire game. His release is the fastest in the NFL. I found myself repeatedly uttering the phrase, "how do you cover THAT?"

It certainly helps to have great weapons, which Rodgers does. The return of tight end Jermichael Finley has made the Packers' offense almost unstoppable. The Packers are flanking three receivers to one side and Finley to the other. Defensively you have to choose between single covering Finley ? which is impossible ? single covering three wide receivers that are as good as any group of receivers in the NFL, or playing eight guys in coverage and watching Rodgers run. Not a pleasant choice.

The Packers only have one vulnerability and that is at tackle. Right tackle Bryan Bulaga is hurt and Marshall Newhouse has replaced him. Newhouse needed a lot of help against the Broncos. At left tackle Chad Clifton is still playing well but has a history of injuries and is not getting any younger. The bad news for the rest of the league is that top draft choice Derek Sherrod, who failed at guard, appears to be getting MUCH better at tackle in the few plays I saw him last week.

Plus, running back James Starks, who played so well in the playoffs, appears to be even better this year. He ran like a tank against the Broncos, but also showed some patience and understanding of the scheme I didn't see last year.

However, the Packers' defense is not playing as well this year. They miss pass rusher Cullen Jenkins and safety Nick Collins, but Clay Matthews continues to play like the best defender in the NFL. For a modest sized linebacker he is quick, powerful, and relentless. He is Troy Polamalu at 250 pounds.

I picked the Packers and the Patriots in the Super Bowl. I'm not too smart, but it is easy to pick the NFL's best two players to play on the NFL's biggest stage. NBC has the Super Bowl this year and I am already excited about the possibility of watching those two quarterbacks put on a show unlike any we have ever seen before.

Senate hits China for 'cheating' to steal US jobs

The Senate voted Monday to advance a bill that would punish China for manipulating its currency to drive exports. If it became law, the bill would risk a trade war over US jobs.

In a rare bipartisan vote, the Senate on Monday voted 79 to 19 to take up a bill that would punish China for manipulating its currency, risking a potential trade war with the economic giant.

Though prospects for the bill in the House are seen as uncertain, jobs lost due to competition with China is a blistering issue for voters, especially in the nation?s industrial heartland.

The bill would impose tariffs on Chinese goods in response to China?s policy of keeping its currency, the yuan, artificially low. The low value of the yuan keeps the price of Chinese goods low, giving them an advantage over American-made goods.

Since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, the US has lost 2.8 million jobs as a result of increased trade with China, according to the Economic Policy Institute. The cumulative US trade deficit with China over the same period amounts to more than $1.76 trillion, according to the 2010 report of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. The commission has highlighted the impact of currency manipulation in each of its annual reports to Congress.

?Jobs and wealth are leaving the US and going to China, because China cheats,? said Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York, in comments to reporters after the Oct. 3 vote. With its currency edge alone, ?China grabs for itself a 30 percent advantage.?

But critics, including business groups that benefit from trade with China, say that the Senate bill could set off Chinese retaliation that could damage US exports in a critical market.

?This misguided legislation could turn out to be the opening salvo in a trade war with China, said Erik Autor, international trade counsel of the National Retail Federation, in a statement.

China trade is one of those rare big economic issues that does not break on party lines. Thirty-one Republicans joined all but three Democrats on a procedural vote in support of the bill. Sixteen Republicans, including those elected with strong tea party support, and Democratic Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray of Washington, a state with strong trade ties with China, opposed the measure.

Voting against China is ?great politics, but terrible policy,? said Sen. Bob Corker (R) of Tennessee after the vote. ?We?re in a recession with a financial crisis in Europe. Do we really want to add to that a trade war with the [next] largest economy in the world??

In 2010, the Democrat-controlled House passed a similar measure, but the new GOP House majority is in no rush to take up the issue again. House majority leader Eric Cantor told reporters on Monday that he is ?curious as to where the [Obama] administration is on this.?

?If there are unfair practices going on, we should look to our trade representative and the administration to address those,? he added.

Ethical Dilemma? Let the Potter Box Sway You | chelsy says hi!

The Potter Box, not to be confused with Pandora?s Box is a model that incorporates four steps to reach an ethical decision. The steps of the box here is (1) understanding the facts, (2) outlining the values inherent in the decision, (3) applying relevant philosophical principles and (4) articulating a loyalty. Stuck in an ethical dilemma? Whip out the box and it?ll guide you on what to do when the grounds are shaky in your decision-making.

To test out this model, I used a case-study called The Pimp, The Prostitute, and the Preacher. In this case the city was attempting to arrest pimps rather than the prostitutes and their clients trying to nip the problem in the bud. But to do that, the hoes and their clients had to testify in court to air all of their dirty laundry. Some basic facts were that some girls were underage and that they could not prove money came into the pimps? hands for sexual acts.

Step 1: Obviously as a reporter at the court trials, you have all the information on what happened, who is involved and how the case is going. But as a reporter you have the choice on how much of that information should be published? Since the prostitutes in this case were underage, obviously their names shouldn?t be in print.

Step 2 (Outlining the Values): This is where things get tricky. Whereas I value the truth to high regard, I also really do not like meddling in others? relationships and personal affairs. I am big on retaining people?s privacy on certain matters, such as the identities of underage prostitutes.

But hold up! Let?s say one of the clients was a priest, the supposed mediator between the holy realm and Earth, a community leader, a role model, and a loyal ?family man? who lives by the Bible. Do you give him the same privacy you give the girls? Or do you find that holding a secret of his secret affairs and betrayal to his community is too much so you have to publish the truth?

Step 3: Is omitting some information from the trial justifiable? Yes, obviously. But is omitting information about the priest justifiable? I think so, to print his name would be to discredit him fully and would require many follow-up stories on both him and the girls (it is what the public craves). Printing his name could lead to the newspaper turning almost into a tabloid magazine with gossip stories. It would also take away from the original story, underage girls acting as prostitutes at the local mall.

Step 4: With new facts in the case (such as the Preacher being a client), I?m not sure where my loyalties now lie with the case and printing his name is still up in the air because there is conflicting loyalties in myself, such as the need to seek the truth and defend it always, but also the need to respect one?s privacy if it is not pivotal to my story.

Side note: Let me just say that I?m disgusted by a preacher soliciting sex by underage girls, although the case-study did not mention how the trials came out, I hope the clients of the girls were also charged with accounts of statutory rape.
