Nonprofit Business Plan Sample - Nonprofit Board Crisis

Nonprofit?business plans are effectively the tools for implementing an organization's strategic planning goals.?? This tool can be very effective in understanding how to effective?reach a specific audience with an offer (service or product) that is desired.? A business plan also helps clarify exactly how and organization will want to structure and manage its staff and resources to deliver an offering; the source of resources and income to continue to deliver and offering; and, the risks and a mitigation plan to address "issues".

Take for example the Community Farm described in the Sept-Oct 2012 Utne Reader and originally published in the Grist (July 5, 2012).? Corbin Hill Farm wanted to make "sustainably grown local produce" accessible to low income communities (in New York).? A market assessment indicated that folks living in Harlem and South Bronx didn't have much access "good fresh food".? The farmer's first plan was to create a CSA (community supported agriculture) program in which "members' buy-in or get shares and during the season get food.? But the target communities didn't have the monies to participate in advance while a weekly program made participation, even with food stamps, possible.?

With further thought and a desire to provide food to a whole lot more folks than he was able to serve, the farmer determined that demand really called for more farms to be engaged and he formed a co-op selling weekly shares and providing a wide and deep access to quality and variety.??? One last piece of the puzzle was to create multiple pick-up sites recognizing that residents needed much more physical access than just one locale for food delivery.?

The current plan recognizes a need for 1200 share-holders to break-even in the operation with a current demand of 750.

So let's review what the business plan looked like:

Market: residents in Harlem and South Bronx desiring good, fresh, affordable and locally grown and delivered food

Offering: fresh, locally sustainabile food

Pricing: within the budgets of the buyers

Distribution: multiple-local community sites (like churches)

Communications: word-of mouth

Operations and Management: a network of farmers linked together and supported by the initiating farm.

Financing: 1200 shareholders paying weekly; eleven investors providing start-up capital.

Risks: bad growth seasons -- just won't have any thing to sell nor will spend the money on delivery and the like

Women have issues, regardless of how many times they got laid.
It's your choice in the end, but bear in mind there are women of quality out there who are actually more mature, intelligent, and wiser than the younger or more 'innocent' crowd, due to their experiences with men not despite them.

The ironic thing is that I was the one in the relationship always trying to sabotage everything because yes -> I was not used to vulnerability and long term commitments. My wife however, who ironically has a more extensive past, was the patient one and although we had problems, she was always passionate and never gave up. She was the one ready for marriage, I was the one who wasn't.

That's what it comes down to -> you can't always blame a woman's past for everything she does in the present.

I think what the OP [ Falcon king ] is saying is that this woman originally hid her past. She outright LIED to him because she knew her emotional state.
If the OP knew that she was a serial cheater, he would not have invested much time in the relationship with her.
If they were both just looking for a " good time", then he would not have been disappointed in the end.
The main reason women hide their past IMO, is not so much of the fear of being judged wrongfully, but because they are ashamed of it.

Ok so lets take another look at this.

Op meets this woman in a book store, and they instantly click and begin to talk.
They talk about stuff like kife , philosophy etc.
There is chemistry.
Lady then decides to tell OP some of her life story and OP tells her his.
Lady tells OP that she wants to be honest with him and tells him the TRUTH.
OP decides he really likes this woman and sees a future with her based on what she has told him, and her HONESTY.
Op knows what to look out for and so they start a relationship on the firm , sound foundation of TRUST and TRUTH.

This is what people look for in a relationship.

To an extent, it does have an impact. My first relationship was when I was 18. I lost my virginity to him right before i turned 19. I thought he was "the one" (omg I was an IDIOT) but later found out that I was one of many females he was seeing. There was absolutely nothing special between us. It was all a lie. I ended up pregnant before finding out. I was SO devastated by that because I was ALWAYS the one turning guys down left and right and the FIRST guy I slept with lied to me about pretty much everything he ever told me, got me pregnant, and left....So when I met my husband we had serious issues in the beginning. I was slightly..... a lunatic. I don't even know how he stuck with me. I snooped through his stuff constantly, put a key logger on his computer, manipulated and twisted his words to make a mountain out of a molehill, you name it. I even slapped him once because he put cologne on to go to a carwash. INSANE, I know. But that was totally influenced by my past. Now, most guys would RUN RUN RUN from that behavior (rightfully so, I might add).... but my husband took my past into consideration and hoped and prayed it would change.....and it totally did. I am absolutely nothing like I was when we first hooked up as far as jealousy and insecurity goes.

He could have said I wasn't a good fit for him.... but so glad he took the chance because we are perfect for each other.....

Likewise, he had always been in a serious relationship. Usually I would look at guys like this as people who just constantly need to need someone and need to be needed by someone. I watched my brother run through gf after gf, and all of them were "the one". I always thought that would make me feel like I was "just another one". Glad I didn't feed into those assumptions.....

Love your story, your husband saw the whole picture... he knew what he was up against and he saw faith & promise in you., bound & determined to NOT give up on you..... your heart was in the right place with that BF -he knew that too, how utterly devestated you were .....

Your love story makes me think of this song ... she had a really tough time, deep heartbreak ... but he was there, not going anywhere, wanted to be her lover, be her best friend... catch her every fall.

FalconKing said : But how do you know unless you ask those questions. People's behavior is a product of many things. Past decisions is one of them. I want someone that I can ask any question to and not have it be off limits.
This IS me 100% - deal breaker #1. Anyone who refuses to vulnerably talk about their past would never work with me.

I really am not someone who expects perfection at all , life is full of Grays.... people are human , we screw up, make bad decisions in a moment, some are more immature than others in their youth.... then they grow up, mature and have MORE conviction than anyone around them against NOT doing what they did !! This is absolutely HUGE!!

So my aim would be to uncover where their is NOW, where it has traveled.... what they have gleaned along the way in light of their various experiences....or smooth sailing. Most importantly I would want their heartfelt honesty.

The same values ....absolutely....but that doesn't mean we have to come from the same side of the fence. I believe genuine LOVE can conquer near anything ... including one's past.

Little-known Ryan to take center-stage at Republican convention

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Paul Ryan takes his turn in the spotlight on Wednesday for the biggest speech of his political career when he accepts the nomination as Mitt Romney's vice presidential running mate at the Republican National Convention.

A question mark continues to hang over the convention as Hurricane Isaac slams into the Louisiana and Mississippi shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The storm missed the Tampa area, but has cast something of a pall over the convention because delegates there are loathe to seem overly joyful while Americans elsewhere suffer.

Heading the list of speakers on Wednesday is Ryan, a conservative budget hawk from Wisconsin.

Careful not to emulate predecessor Sarah Palin, who fell from grace quickly after bursting onto the 2008 campaign, Ryan has made a cautious start to the presidential race.

It is still unclear whether he will help Romney draw support from undecided voters who may be the critical factor in the November 6 presidential election. Polls show a mixed picture.

There has been no doubt, however, that Ryan has energized conservatives in a way Romney was unable to do during the long months of the Republican primary battle, when he faced one then another conservative challenger.

The boyish 42-year-old Ryan, a fitness fanatic, has shown himself to be an affable asset to Romney thus far.

He has helped generate large crowds for Romney when the pair has campaigned together, and some conservatives who were not all that excited about the former governor of Massachusetts are now ready to work hard for him with Ryan on the ticket.

Ryan's presence on the ticket has helped put in play Wisconsin, a Midwestern state that has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984. A Romney victory in Wisconsin could alter the electoral map in a way that could hurt President Barack Obama's hopes for re-election.

LITTLE KNOWN OUTSIDE D.C.

Ryan's place in prime time on Wednesday offers him the chance to introduce himself to millions of Americans who are just now starting to tune in to a presidential race that is too close to call with 70 days left until the voting.

While Ryan, chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, is well known in Washington, he is little known elsewhere.

What is known about him is not necessarily popular with many Americans. A budget plan he proposed in the House would cut government spending deeply and overhaul the Medicare health insurance program for seniors.

Democrats charge Ryan would "end Medicare as we know it" and are using his budget plan against him in states like Florida, with its large population of retirees, and in Virginia, where thousands of government employees populate the suburbs adjoining Washington, D.C. Romney can ill afford to lose either of these two battleground states.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Tuesday found Ryan has 50 percent approval from Americans and 50 percent disapproval.

Speakers at the Republican convention thus far have sought to put a human face on the often robotic Romney and enhance his likability. On Tuesday, there was no better advocate for him than his wife, Ann Romney.

She admitted to reporters she had never used a prompting device to read a speech, but during the actual delivery she seemed at ease as she painted a personal portrait of Romney, who Democrats denounce as an out-of-touch wealthy elitist.

Mrs. Romney spoke of the early years of their marriage when the high school sweethearts dined on cheap meals of tuna and pasta, saying her husband was "not handed success" as Romney's opponents charge.

She also worked to try to appeal to women voters who are more supportive of Obama than Romney.

"It's the moms who always have to work a little harder, to make everything right," she said.

Five Most Profitable Restaurant Chains in Australia

In Australia, large numbers of busy families eat meals on the go, and the restaurant industry in this country is big business. Eateries have sprung up everywhere, and proper marketing of each restaurant means a healthy profit margin. According to government figures, Australians spend about $62.5 billion each year on eating out. Five profitable restaurant chains are leading the pack in terms of retail food sales.

Eagle Boys Pizza

The chain was founded in Albury, New South Wales in 1987 by high school dropout Tom Potter. By 2010, Eagle Boys Pizza was Australia?s second largest pizza maker. It now operates more than 335 stores in Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales, the ACT and the Northern Territory. It is 100 percent Australian-owned, and has racked up some impressive statistics.

  • ?It has a $160 million annual turnover.
  • Eagle Boys sells 16 million pizzas each year.
  • There are 8,000 team members working for the chain.

Its success can be attributed to several factors, including the technology it uses, customised business models tailored to the individual community, vigilant marketing of its product, branding, trade marking and profitable business relationships. The chain continues to grow today.

Gloria Jean?s Coffees

Gloria Jean and Ed Kvetko opened the first store in 1979 near Chicago, and it spread overseas when the first Australian Gloria Jean?s opened in Sydney in 1996. The gourmet coffee concept quickly took off, and franchising began in 1997 with the second store opening in Eastgardens, NSW. By 2003 a Gloria Jean?s was present in every state and territory in Australia, and in 2004 the chain became Australian-owned. Regular milestones marked its steady growth.

  • ?By 2008 Gloria Jean?s Coffees had opened more than 900 stores, with 470 of them in Australia. It signed 36 Master Franchise agreements in 35 countries.
  • By 2011 those figures had increased to 1,000 stores, with 480 of them located in Australia. It had inked 42 Master Franchise agreements.

Coffee consumption is increasing in Australia, and the chain is one of the top 25 fastest growing franchises in terms of revenue and number of stores. Australians drink 65 percent more coffee than they did in 1996, and most coffee purchases are made at franchised coffee stores. Gloria Jean?s Coffees is now the country?s largest coffee shop, and serves about seven million guests per month.

Hungry Jack?s?

In 1971 Jack Cowin opened Hungry Jack?s, a franchise of the international Burger King? Corporation, in the Perth suburb of Innaloo, Australia. Initial success led to the opening of another store on Anzac Highway Everard Park in 1972, and a third in Kedron in Queensland in 1974. Within a decade, the restaurant chain grew to 26 stores in three states.

Its growth can be attributed to shrewd business moves as well as a solid branding of its product. Hungry Jack?s broke into the Victoria market by buying 11 stores from the Wendy?s Hamburger chain in 1986, and converting nine of them to Hungry Jack?s restaurants. Hungry Jack?s marketing slogan, ?The Burgers are Better at Hungry Jack?s,? maintained its brand awareness among competitors.

  • During its 2009-2010 fiscal year, the chain reported an after-tax profit of $32.1 million from sales of $1.043 billion.

Today it has more than 300 locations, with restaurants operating in every state. Hungry Jack?s continues to reinvent itself, and plans to overhaul its image by 2013. It has changed its old marketing slogan to ?Hungry Jack?s makes it better,? and it will add new menu items as well as update its website and renovate its restaurants.

Oporto??s

In 1986, Antonio Cerqueira opened Oporto?s, a Portuguese chicken restaurant, in the Sydney beach suburb of Bondi, and since then the chain has steadily grown in popularity. It has become known for opening an average of 15 stores per year, and is one of the few businesses to be featured in the BRW Fast Franchises edition for nine consecutive years.

There are now more than 140 Oporto?s restaurants across Australia and New Zealand with a customer base of more than 13 million people a year. It expanded into Britain and China, and then to the U.S. in 2011.

Oporto?s marketing strategy includes promoting its ?fresh, not frozen, grilled, not fried? method of food preparation, and the menu items include burgers, chicken, wraps and salads. Its business model encourages individuals to purchase franchises for a $50,000 franchise fee, and open their own store. The potential business profits for each location, says Oporto?s, depends on the drive and ambition of the individual operator.

Red Rooster

In 1972, the Kailis family opened the first Red Rooster restaurant in Kelmscott, Western Australia, never realising it would grow into Australia?s biggest, most successful roast chicken franchise. The company?s growth is marked by a series of purchases, acquisitions and careful business decisions.

  • In 1981 Coles Myer bought the store.
  • By 1992 it was converted back into a Red Rooster chain, growing to 230 stores.
  • In 2002, Australian Fast Foods Pty. Ltd. acquired the chain.
  • In 2010 Red Rooster expanded its menu, adding burgers, baguettes and wraps.

Today, Red Rooster, with the logo ?It?s gotta be red,? has more than 360 locations across Australia. It has more than 7,500 employees and is one of the biggest fast-food chains in the country. In 2011 it posted more than $442.5 million in system wide sales, and Restaurant News named it as being in the International Top 25 regional chains.

Demand for fast food in Australia remains high, and some of the savviest restaurant chains have capitalised on the profits to be made. In order to stay in business in this competitive industry, franchises must constantly remain vigilant to prevent the competition from overtaking them. With the lifestyles of most families and working professionals leaning towards eating out rather than eating at home, the promise of large profits will be the goal of successful franchises.

Microbes help hyenas communicate via scent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Bacteria in hyenas' scent glands may be the key controllers of communication.

The results, featured in the current issue of Scientific Reports, show a clear relationship between the diversity of hyena clans and the distinct microbial communities that reside in their scent glands, said Kevin Theis, the paper's lead author and Michigan State University postdoctoral researcher.

"A critical component of every animal's behavioral repertoire is an effective communication system," said Theis, who co-authored the study with Kay Holekamp, MSU zoologist. "It is possible that without their bacteria, many animals couldn't 'say' much at all."

This is the first time that scientists have shown that different social groups of mammals possess different odor-producing bacterial communities. These communities produce unique chemical signatures, and the hyenas can distinguish among them by using their noses.

Past research has demonstrated important roles played by microbes in digestion and other bodily functions. It's also widely known that most mammals use scent to signal a wide range of traits, including sex, age, reproductive status and group membership. This study details bacteria living in a mutually beneficial relationship with their hyena hosts. It also highlights the contribution of new DNA sequencing technologies showcasing the role good, symbiotic bacteria play in animal behavior.

On the grassy Kenyan plains, Theis gathered information about the bacterial types present in samples of paste, a sour-smelling secretion that hyenas deposit on grass stalks. Field samples were collected from hyenas' scent pouches and analyzed using next-generation sequence technology back at MSU labs. The samples revealed a high degree of similarities, microbial speaking, between deposits left by members of the same clans. They also varied distinctly from paste left by hyenas from other clans.

"One benefit of sharing a common microbial community in their scent pouches would be in terms of job sharing when hyenas scent mark their territory," Theis said. "Multiple members of the clan could more efficiently carry out the job and mark more territory."

Furthermore, group-specific social odors could facilitate the recognition of social partners, thereby reducing rates of squabbles within clans, he added.

Future studies will dig deeper into the relationship between bacteria and host as well as understanding the scope of information being conveyed by the bacteria.

"The complex social lives of these animals may ultimately be reliant upon their unheralded symbiotic microbial communities," Theis said.

This research was funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

NASA's IceBridge seeking new view of changing sea ice

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? This year scientists working on NASA's Operation IceBridge, a multi-year airborne science mission to study changing ice conditions at both poles, debuted a new data product with the potential to improve Arctic sea ice forecasts.

Using new data processing techniques, IceBridge scientists were able to release an experimental quick look product before the end of the 2012 Arctic campaign. The main challenge faced when producing data for seasonal forecasts is the time needed to crunch the numbers, something that has in the past taken IceBridge scientists more than six months to do after the data was collected in the spring. This is too late to use for Arctic sea ice forecasts of the annual seasonal minimum, which takes place in September.

The new product could potentially be used in seasonal sea ice forecasts in the future. "The community is excited about it," said IceBridge science team co-lead Jackie Richter-Menge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research Laboratory, Hanover, N.H. "We're hoping to build on this season's momentum and interest."

Scientists have been keeping an eye on Arctic sea ice in recent years because it is changing and they want to understand what those changes might mean. Arctic sea ice grows and recedes in a seasonal pattern, with a maximum coverage in March and a minimum in September. These high and low points vary from year to year, but there is a clear trend toward smaller minimums that mean more open water in the Arctic each summer and fall. This decrease in ice is already affecting ocean and terrestrial life in the Arctic, accelerating warming in the region and leading to economic and social changes.

"Sea ice is a sensitive indicator of a changing climate," said NASA researcher Nathan Kurtz at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. It can also act as a feedback to warming in the Arctic. Because ice is much lighter in color than ocean water it has a higher albedo, meaning it reflects more sunlight than water. "A loss of sea ice can cause the Earth as a whole to warm," Kurtz said. The loss of sea ice has also been linked to shifts in weather patterns and distribution of nutrients in the ocean.

Getting the Whole Picture

Sea ice modulates a complex interaction between two systems -- the ocean and the atmosphere -- and is affected by a number of factors. Surface temperature is the one that most readily comes to mind. Warming air and ocean temperatures melt the ice over time. But ice thickness and the amount of snow that accumulates on it are important in controlling the amount of growth and melt. As anyone who has been to a summer barbecue knows, larger masses of ice melt slower than smaller ones. Thicker sea ice will stay around longer than thin ice.

The largest portion of sea ice is hidden under the water's surface, which makes measuring its thickness trickier than getting its extent. To find thickness, researchers rely on a variety of advanced instruments and a law of physics that goes back to ancient Greece -- the Archimedes Principle. "If you know how much ice is above the water and know its density, you can calculate the thickness," said Kurtz. "On average 80 to 90 percent of the ice is below the surface." With this knowledge, it's possible to take the ice freeboard, the amount above the water's surface, and calculate its thickness. IceBridge's Airborne Topographic Mapper, or ATM, instrument uses a laser to measure how high the ice surface is above sea level. But snow accumulation means that what ATM measures is not just ice. To address this complication, IceBridge uses one of its radar instruments to measure snow thickness, and then with simple subtraction, researchers can figure out the true ice freeboard.

It's important to factor for snow thickness because while it adds height to sea ice, it adds less mass than an equivalent thickness of ice. But snow thickness is a valuable measurement in its own right. "There's growing interest in our snow depth measurements as a stand-alone product," Richter-Menge said.

Snow affects how sea ice grows and melts by insulating it, slowing growth, and further increasing albedo as snow is even lighter colored than ice. But snow can also speed up melting. Snow melts, forming ponds of water that -- due to increased albedo -- absorb more heat than either snow or ice would. Snow also plays a role in the Arctic ecosystem. "For instance, snow needs to be a certain depth for the survival of seal pups," said Richter-Menge.

Putting It All Together

Creating a new data product calls for new processing methods and a good understanding of how data are collected. To facilitate this, Kurtz traveled to Greenland during the 2012 Arctic campaign. For about two weeks in March, Kurtz participated in survey flights on the NASA P-3B aircraft to see how instrument operators gathered sea ice data. "I asked a lot of questions," Kurtz said. "And I got a good impression for a short stay." Although it is tempting to use this data in this year's seasonal forecasts, both Kurtz and Richter-Menge caution that while they are optimistic about the new product, it still needs testing. After the upcoming sea ice minimum, researchers can compare the quick look and traditional products and test models using the quick look data against observations. "As the season goes on, we'll see how useful the quick look product is," Richter-Menge said.

Next year's Arctic campaign will see further refinement of the methods used to create the quick look product. "The key is knowing how to deal with the data," Kurtz said. He plans to return to Greenland in 2013 to work on ways to speed up processing. "I learned a lot this year," Kurtz said. "It should be easier now that I've done it once."

ArQule plunges on delay in cancer drug study

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of ArQule Inc. plunged Wednesday after the company said one of its partners has stopped enrolling patients in a clinical trial of its cancer drug tivantinib.

THE SPARK: ArQule's Japanese partner Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co. temporarily suspended enrollment of patients in a late-stage trial of tivantinib as a treatment for lung cancer. Kyowa made the decision on a recommendation from a safety monitoring committee because some patients are believed to have contracted interstitial lung disease.

Interstitial lung disease is a group of conditions that cause scarring of the lung tissue and impair a patient's ability to breathe. The Mayo Clinic says the scarring is generally irreversible.

ArQule disclosed the stoppage in a form filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday. It said Kyowa Hakko Kirin is still treating patients who had already enrolled in the study.

THE BIG PICTURE: Tivantinib is designed to block a molecule that is involved in cancer cell growth, blood vessel formation, survival, and metastasis. It is also being studied as a treatment for liver cancer and other forms of the disease in addition to lung cancer.

Kyowa Hakko Kirin has the rights to market the drug in Japan and some other Asian countries, and Daiichi Sankyo, another Japanese drug company, has the rights to market the drug in the U.S., Europe, South America, and other regions.

In January, ArQule and Daiichi Sankyo said tivantinib delayed the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of primary liver cancer, by 56 percent compared to a placebo.

Tivantinib is ArQule's most advanced drug candidate. The Woburn, Mass., company has three other drugs in early-stage clinical testing.

SHARE ACTION: ArQule shares sank $1.31, or 19.6 percent, to $5.39 in afternoon trading. Earlier the stock dropped 28 percent to $4.81. Before the start of trading on Wednesday, ArQule stock was down 19.5 percent from its annual high of $8.32.

YEMEN: Women die as violence impedes antenatal care in Abyan

In 2011, many Yemenis fled Abyan governorate for makeshift shelters, like this one, on the roof of a school in Aden

ABYAN, 24 August 2012 (IRIN) ? In June, after spending 11 months in a makeshift camp for people displaced by violence, 19-year-old Dawlah Muslih, then seven months pregnant, returned to her home in an area of Yemen where safety was supposed to have improved. It was a move her family would come to regret.

Two months ago, the government announced that the militant group Ansar al-Sharia had been routed from the southern Abyan Governorate by a large-scale military offensive. Hundreds of displaced families have since returned to their homes in Jaar and Zinjibar cities, according to Abdullah Al-Duhaimi, manager for a government-run office for internally displaced people and returnees based in Zinjibar city.

But just two weeks after Muslih returned from a shelter in Aden, violence returned to Abyan. Suicide bombings have resumed, as have clashes between remaining Ansar al-Sharia fighters and armed tribesmen on the one hand, and criminal gangs on the other, Muslih?s brother, Mohammed, told IRIN.

On 4 August, Muslih?s water broke and her family set out for the nearest hospital in Jaar City.

?We were just two or three kilometers far from al-Razi hospital in Jaar, but couldn?t make it to the hospital after we heard a huge explosion in the main street leading to the hospital that had shaken the car we were in,? Muslih?s older sister, Habibah, told IRIN.

Muslih was unable to deliver normally, and unable to reach a facility that could perform a caesarean section. On 7 August, she died at home, her baby still unborn.

Insecurity obstructs healthcare

Despite the government?s insistence that stability has improved since it regained territory taken by militants last year, insecurity remains a key problem in Abyan.

?We stay home most of the time. We fear being killed if we go out,? Mohammed Muslih said.

Nashwah Hassan, a local midwife in Jaar City, told IRIN that insecurity prevented too many pregnant women, who have returned from displacement over the past two months, from obtaining prenatal care.

?To my knowledge, Dawlah is the fifth mother to die from dysfunctional labour over the past month. They couldn?t go to al-Razi Hospital for fear of suicide bombers and landmines,? Hassan said. ?All these five mothers had to undergo a C-section because their CT-scans [taken while in displacement in Aden] show that the baby?s head wasn?t descendant enough to ease delivery.?

While in displacement, many pregnant women had better access to antenatal healthcare services provided by the government and aid agencies. This was particularly true for those who sheltered in Aden.

Antenatal healthcare services have historically been poor and limited in southern Yemen.

In Abyan Governorate, nine public hospitals and 128 health centres serve an estimated 480,000 people. The hospitals lack specialized staff, equipment and funding, and the health centres are largely limited to providing primary healthcare services, according to Al-Khadher Mohammed al-Saeedi, head of the Ministry of Health?s regional office in Abyan.

In 2010, the UN Population Fund?estimated?that 22 women die in Yemen every day due to pregnancy- and birth-related complications and that antenatal care coverage was 47 percent ? the lowest in the Middle East.

Months of clashes between the army and Ansar al-Sharia militants have only made the situation worse, al-Saeedi said. While he could not give an exact number of deaths resulting lack of healthcare access, ?pregnant mothers are the most affected by such a dire security situation,? he said.

Following their return, ?recurrent sounds of landmine blasts and suicide bombings made women returnees traumatized. They fear going out to seek medical consultations,? al-Duhaimi told IRIN.

Lethal violence

More than two hundred people have been killed in the governorate and several dozen injured since mid-June, said Mohammed Fadhl Monasser, acting chief of Abyan?s security department.

?No security has been restored yet. You could be killed by a suicide bombing or in a landmine explosion at any time,? he told IRIN. ?Suicide bombings have become a daily scene since the military offensive ended in mid-June.?

On 4 August, the day Dawlah couldn?t make it to hospital, at least 45 people were killed and another 50 injured when a suicide bomber attacked a funeral service taking place in Jaar.

?Levels of violence have not decreased, but the nature of violence in Abyan has changed. In towns like Jaar, armed clashes have been replaced with indiscriminate violence from bombing attacks and accidents involving landmines,? said Anne Garella, project coordinator with M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF) in Aden.

Local healthcare

According to al-Saeedi, local health centres in the governorate are either understaffed or have no staff at all. He added that persistent insecurity in Abyan discouraged dozens of doctors and nurses from resuming work in public hospitals and health centres. Sometimes people venture out to their nearest health post, only to find that doctors are not on duty, MSF?s Garella said.

Abyan Governor Jamal al-Aqel said popular committees of armed tribesmen ? which backed the government in the fight against Ansar Al-Sharia militants ? and some local NGOs have been collaborating with the government to protect public and private properties amid the very limited presence of security personnel.

?Interior Minister Abdulqader Qahtan pledged to provide us with more security personnel and required equipment such as vehicles and radars. We are waiting for this pledge to be fulfilled,? al-Aqel said. ?This could take several weeks, if not months.?

How To Use Podcast Directories To Promote Your Online Business ...

?

Here?s just another marketing method to get your teeth into. Podcasts I hear you say with trepidation, ?what are they, how do they work and how do I make them?? All valid questions and concerns but its like so many things relating to the internet that at first glace look pretty scary and the initial reaction is ?I can?t do that!? And sure this article just covers the opportunity in a brief way & you?ll need to do a bit more research, but honestly once you get your head around it ? you?ll wonder why you didn?t do it before, trust me and read on??

What?s a Podcast? A podcast is an internet channel used to communicate. It?s like a niche-specific radio station. Podcast directories are similar to article directories, but people subscribe to them. When you submit your podcasts here, they go out to all the directory?s subscribers.

The cool thing about podcast directories is that there?s a built-in audience who are already interested in your niche. You can use these directories to show your expertise, advertise your products or services, brand yourself and generate leads. If you do it right and offer high quality information, you?ll have a community of loyal listeners tuning in every week.

How To Create Podcasts

To make quality podcasts, all you need is a computer, a microphone and some type of recording software. Record your podcast and save it to MP3 format; now, it?s ready to submit.

You can use your articles or other web content as a script. Or you can use it as an outline and just talk about your topic. The important thing is just to offer quality information and make it valuable for your listeners.

Each directory has different submission rules, but most of them allow you to create a description. Optimize that for your keywords and make it something that will draw them in. Some directories work like social networking sites, so you can interact with other users and create communities and groups.

When you?re looking for directories to use, be sure to read their terms of use because each is different.

Tips For Creating Great Podcasts

To make a good podcast, all you really need to do is talk. That?s it. But, I?d recommend including some intro music and maybe outro music. This kind of brands your podcasts and also makes them smoother. It?s kind of abrupt when it just suddenly starts with somebody talking.

Once you?ve got your podcast action going, stick to your schedule and be consistent. Just like a radio show, podcasts are usually daily, weekly, or monthly. Before you even get started, decide on this schedule based on how committed you?re going to be. Your listeners will be expecting regular shows.

One great way to create excellent high-quality podcasts with little fuss and bother is to interview people in your niche. It?s a win-win situation ? interviewing a known name in your niche will get people tuning in to check out your podcast; and the person you?re interviewing gets some exposure and a chance to build their authority out of the deal.

Finally, market your podcasts. Let everybody know on your list, website and social media sites when the next show is going to be. Once you get started making podcasts, it?s a lot of fun!

And here?s a list of the best podcast directories to get you started:

Isaac promises drought-relief in south/central U.S

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Fallout from Tropical Storm Isaac is likely to include drought-relieving rainfall for a big chunk of the central and southern U.S. Midwest, an agricultural meteorologist said on Monday.

Isaac was about 400 miles southeast of the mouth of the U.S. Mississippi River early on Monday and, according to Dee, should make landfall early Wednesday on either the Mississippi or Louisiana Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane with 90-mile-per-hour winds.

A side benefit to the storm will be welcome rainfall to parched U.S. crop land and grazing lands.

The worst drought in more than a half-century has already harmed much of the nation's corn and soybean crops. While the wet weather as a fallout from Isaac will be welcome, it is too little too late to be a huge benefit to this year's crop.

"The big question is how much will later planted soybeans benefit," said John Dee, meteorologist for Global Weather Monitoring. "It would have helped a lot more if the rainfall came two weeks ago."

Dee said from 3 to 5 inches or more rainfall was expected beginning on Wednesday and Thursday in Louisiana and Mississippi, from 1 to 4 inches by Friday in Arkansas and Missouri, and from 0.50 to 1.00 inch or more by Saturday and Sunday in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

"It will certainly add valuable soil moisture for fall planting of the winter wheat crop," Dee said. "Also, Kansas and Oklahoma received good rains of 1.00 to 2.00 inches over the weekend, which will help plantings of hard red winter wheat there."

Dee said the remnants from Isaac, while providing much-needed moisture, were not likely to harm mature crops in the southern or central U.S. Midwest.

"There will be some wind, but I don't think there will be much harm to crops," he said. "It will slow harvest for a few days."

The annual Pro Farmer tour of Midwest crops found signs of severe crop losses in the top-producing Midwest crops. On Friday it forecast the U.S. corn and soybean harvest smaller than the government is predicting, with production the lowest in nearly a decade.

Additionally, a Reuters poll of 11 analysts estimated the 2012 U.S. corn yield per acre at 121.5 bushels, the lowest in 16 years, and production at 10.5 billion bushels, an eight-year low.

In its first survey asking for estimates of the amount of corn to be harvested compared with plantings, the poll showed the percentage of harvested corn area at the lowest in nine years.

Analysts' expectations for corn production this season fell 3 percent below the U.S. government's forecast earlier in August and 6 percent below a similar poll of analysts taken by Reuters at the end of July.

Late on Monday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will release updated harvest progress reports in its weekly crop progress report. Last Monday, the USDA said 4 percent of the U.S. corn crop had already been harvested, the fastest start ever. The crop was planted early and then was pushed to maturity by relentless heat and drought over the summer.

How does Ronald McDonald look nowaday? ? L-Jay Health

I was doing some research and came across an article on McDonalds and thought to myself ?When was the last time I ate there?? Thankfully I could not remember the last time I ate fast food at all. It seems like everywhere you go there is a McDonalds restaurant on the corner. Now they are in hospitals, colleges, airports, and even churches.

I remember watching a documentary Super Size Me?and it was very interesting but sad of all the negative health effects that Morgan Spurlock developed just by eating fast food all those times, not to mention all the weight he gained as well. He put his health on the line just to educate and demonstrate how our bodies react to these foods. If you?haven?t?seen the documentary I highly recommend it.

Fast food costs are inexpensive and tastes very good, but the negative effects on physical health last much longer. With the high-calorie meals come more fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar ? and therefore fewer vitamins, minerals and other nutrients ? than in healthier foods.?The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans reports that these eating habits create nutritional deficiencies along with weight gain. The health problems that stem from overweight and obesity alone can severely limit lifestyles and shorten life spans.

Fast food can be the biggest contributer to obesity.?Fast foods are loaded with fat and calories. Ordering without limits may have negative effects on your health and weight. Hamburgers with multiple ?patties, cheese, bacon and mayonnaise may exceed the 65mg fat limit recommended by the USDA for the whole day.

Many drive-through foods and drinks have high sugar content, including milkshakes, 62g of sugar, and colas, 44g, in 16-oz. servings as per the USDA.?Fast foods contain high amounts of cholesterol and salt, two nutrients that contribute to cardiovascular health problems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report a direct link between sodium intake and negative effects on blood pressure, and note that Americans consume most of their sodium in processed and restaurant foods.

What have fast food companies done to make things better?

Fast food companies are developing healthier options to meet the desires of healthier?consumer?needs.. Many fast food chains now offer healthy options including low-fat, low calorie foods; fresh foods; bottled water; and salads made with fruits and vegetables. Some stand-outs in fast food nutrition include low-fat salads and sandwiches and grilled chicken.

Other healthier options have been added to many fast food menus. Low-fat yogurt, fruit cups and wheat buns can replace some of the higher fat and lower fiber meal options. However, these healthy choices have the ability to take a wrong turn when mixed with unhealthy selections, such as fried chicken and high-fat dressing on the salads, cookies, candies or high-sugar granola mixed into the yogurt or whipped toppings on the fruit. Stick with the food in its most natural form to get the highest nutritional benefit from it.

(AP) ? Rep. Ron Paul, the plucky GOP presidential candidate yet to get fully behind Mitt Romney, lashed out Sunday at Republican efforts to marginalize his supporters at the upcoming party convention, telling a counter rally to stand firm because "we will become the tent eventually."

Appearing not far from where Romney will collect the Republican nomination, Paul used the rally to lecture a party he thinks is too willing to intervene abroad, too timid when it comes to combating a monetary policy he sees as misguided, and too lax about preserving civil liberties. His remarks were the perfect pitch to a friendly crowd of thousands, who stood the whole time he spoke.

"It made the paper in Washington that the revolution wasn't happening," the Texas Republican said. "Don't they only wish."

Paul ended active campaigning in June, but so far the libertarian-leaning politician hasn't endorsed Romney's candidacy. He told The New York Times for a story Sunday that he was denied a chance to speak because he refused to let the Romney campaign vet his remarks and give an unconditional endorsement.

In contrast to the stately scenery inside the Republican convention arena, the Paul rally had all the trappings of a rock concert: fog lamps, sweeping beams of colorful lights, music thumping with bass, free-flowing tap beer. Blues Traveler frontman John Popper performed ahead of Paul's remarks.

The University of South Florida college basketball arena was hardly full, but boisterous Paul fans erupted most times he was mentioned and wore shirts with his name and image; one shirt read "My President is Paul" and another said "Let Ron Paul Speak."

Paul joked that he was given a speaking slot on Monday night ? when Tropical Storm Isaac was causing the GOP to postpone activities. "Just kidding," he assured.

He didn't win a single state but still amassed more than 175 delegates to the convention, several of whom got a standing ovation when they were introduced as a group at the Paul rally. On stage and among the audience, Paul backers chafed at the idea that their presence in Florida was an unwanted distraction at a convention focused on saluting Romney.

Paul's coalition is made up of anti-war Republicans, people who want stricter government adherence to the Constitution and those who want to dismantle the Federal Reserve, which sets American monetary policy.

His devoted following has caused strains in the convention lead-up. Late last week, Republican convention rule-makers advanced measures designed to blunt the Paul presence, including votes to dull the strength of his contingent in the Maine delegation and another to make it tougher for similar candidates to follow his path in the future.

Ashley Ryan, the young new Republican committeewoman from Maine, said procedural moves viewed as minimizing Paul's supporters would backfire on the GOP.

"Our party will go from being a big tent with many ideas to a small group at the mercy of a few insiders," Ryan said.

Paul carried on with the theme. ""Believe me, we will get in the tent because we will become the tent eventually," he said, adding, "With the energy that we have. It seems to me they would be begging and pleading for us to come into the party."

Tropical Storm Isaac disrupted the GOP schedule, yet planners retained a video tribute to Paul and a speaking role for his son, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, moving both to Wednesday night between 7 and 8 p.m.

Doug Wead, an author and former adviser to both Bush presidents, drew loud applause when he described the congressman as "a clean boat in a sea of garbage." Throughout the day, Paul was held up as a beacon of ideological purity.

Paul, 77, is leaving Congress after his 12th term expires at year's end. But some hope he'll make a fourth run at the White House. He has run the past two election cycles as a Republican and ran once before as a candidate for the Libertarian Party.

Said Austrian School economist Walter Block: "It's true Ron will be 80 in 2016, but he's a young 80."

At one point during the five-hour rally, the audience broke into chants of "Paul '16" ? but they were referring to Rand Paul, not his father.

PFT: Roethlisberger blames FieldTurf for DeCastro's injury

Matthew+Stafford+Detroit+Lions+v+Oakland+Raiders+y5LcmFG1tiMlGetty Images

There?s little worse than having your starting quarterback leave with an injury in the preseason, but it looks like the Lions got little more than a temporary scare from Matthew Stafford on Saturday.

The Lions quarterback left the game with an injury to his left hand, but x-rays taken during the contest were negative. Stafford, who wore a wrap on the hand, said afterward that he would have returned if it had been a regular season game.

?Probably what would have happened in a regular season game is right after it happened, I would have up for x-rays,? Stafford said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. ?If they would have said they were negative, I would have come back in the game. It feels okay right now. It feels fine, really. It?s scary to look down and see your hand swell up by the second.?

Running back Kevin Smith also seems to have avoided an injury that will keep him out of the lineup for an extended period. The oft-injured running back hurt his ankle early in the second half, but also got good news when x-rays came back negative on Saturday.

?It just gets scary under the pile of those big guys laying on you. It?s just a minor tweak, something I?m pretty sure I can get rid of quick. Just stay in the training room,? Smith said. ?More than anything, I was very scared. Just being that I had a high ankle sprain, I know how long it took to get back healthy. It?s not a high ankle sprain, so that?s positive. I?ll get in the treatment room and get back as soon as I can.?

Given the thin ranks at running back early in the season for Detroit, an injury to Smith would have forced the team to look for backfield help before the season starts. They still might do that, but it doesn?t appear they will be quite as desperate as many feared when Smith hobbled off the field in Oakland.

Now the Lions just need to clear up the status of the two cornerbacks who went down against the Raiders to make the whole night a momentary scare instead of a lingering problem.
