Ed Helms' 'Tiny Commando' series coming to Yahoo

NEW YORK (AP) ? Yahoo's latest slate of original programming is led by Ed Helms as a 4-inch-tall crime fighter.

"Tiny Commando," created by the "The Office" star, was unveiled Monday night in a presentation by Yahoo to advertisers in New York. It stars Helms, along with Zachary Levi, of "Chuck," and Gillian Jacobs, of "Community."

Following in Netflix's footsteps, Yahoo will simultaneously release all episodes of "Tiny Commando" and other comedy series this fall.

Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., also will debut a series titled "Losing Your Virginity With John Stamos," in which the former "Full House" actor interviews celebrities about their first sexual experiences. Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock executive produces.

Along with YouTube, Netflix and Hulu, Yahoo has sought in recent years to expand into original programming ? mainly short-form Web series ? that draws users to its platform. Erin McPherson, Yahoo vice president and head of video, said the company has more than doubled its original video programming in the last year.

Yahoo's presentation Monday was part of this week's Digital Content NewFronts, at which digital media companies lay out their programming plans much like TV broadcasters do every spring. Last year, Yahoo touted its most high-profile series: Tom Hanks' sci-fi, animated "Electric City." While "Electric City" was widely judged a dud, Yahoo has found a modest hit in "Burning Love," a parody of "The Bachelor" now beginning its third season.

Also part of this year's slate is Cheryl Hines, a star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Hines and Rachael Harris will star in "We Need Help," a comedy in which the two actresses exploit a shared personal assistant.

Yahoo announced that beginning this summer it's partnering with the WWE to make the Web portal an online hub for professional wrestling videos. Yahoo will produce a 30-minute pre-show to the WWE's "Monday Night Raw" and distribute two weekly wresting series.

Last week, Yahoo announced a deal to stream "Saturday Night Live" archival clips.

Relationship Recital: How We Met | Weddingbee

In order to better understand how lucky we were that we met, I will start by saying that Sparky grew up in St. Louis, went to college in Indiana (Purdue, like Miss Scooter!), and nearly moved to Chicago upon graduation. (He ended up moving to Seattle for a job instead.) I grew up in Seattle and have lived here my whole life with the exception of the few months I studied abroad.

Relationship Recital: How We Met : wedding relationships seattle Map map

Thirty-one hours driving, according to Google Maps

In the summer of 2006 I was getting used to being back in the country (having arrived home from three months abroad). That summer was rough; my grandfather died and the father of the guy I was dating at the time also died, both within two weeks of each other. I was very close to my (now ex) boyfriend?s dad, and both deaths hit me hard. I had already begun to realize that I wasn?t wonderfully happy in my relationship, but I kept thinking maybe things would get better. After his dad died I promised myself I would be strong and supportive and our relationship would fix itself.

During that rough time, we were arguing a lot. On one particular day we had been invited to a party at the home of one of my best friends from college. I hadn?t intended to go, but then we argued so I decided to go to the party on my own.

Approximately one week before meeting Sparky. Please excuse my ridiculous 20-year-old self. / Personal photo

At the party, I walked in and immediately found myself a place on the couch. There was a guy there that I?d never met before, and he proved to be very funny and interesting. I spent hours chatting and laughing with him, and when I eventually left the party many hours later I was so glad that I had gone.

Little did I know that the guy at the party had seen me the moment I entered the party and had decided that he wanted to know me. He thought I was cute and, after talking for hours, thought I was smart and sweet.

We became friends and started hanging out fairly frequently. I knew he was a good guy because less than two weeks after making my acquaintance he helped me move. As our friendship developed, I learned that this guy had gone to high school with my college friend and had run into her randomly on the street in downtown Seattle. Not that big of a deal when you?re from the city, but quite impressive when you realize that they both grew up in the Midwest.

Backing up: Sparky graduated college in May of 2006. Earlier that year he had been offered a position here in Seattle, and it was pretty much exactly what he wanted. He made the decision to accept the offer and make the move to the West Coast. One day, after moving to his new home, Sparky was exploring downtown Seattle. Across the street he thought he saw someone he knew from St. Louis. He wasn?t sure enough to call out to her at that point but instead looked her up on Facebook when he got home. (What would we do without Facebook?) After asking how likely it was that she was at this corner at this time, she replied that yes, it was in fact her! Not only that but she was having a housewarming party and thought Sparky should come so they could catch up and reconnect.

Well, they didn?t really get the chance to reconnect or catch up at that party because Sparky spent the entire time in conversation with yours truly. We hit it off, we clicked, and we became great friends.

We went to Seattle U soccer games, we tried new restaurants, we went to Mariners games, and we played video games. Sparky?s apartment happened to be a block from my school and work, so I spent a lot of time there. We really connected and it wasn?t very long (read: October) before I had to admit to myself that I had feelings for him.

One problem: we both were dating other people.

Anyone else meet the guy of their dreams only to find that he was already spoken for?

Benchmark's Bill Gurley: Late-Stage Market Is ?Most Frothy? Since The Late 1990s

gurley-disruptBill Gurley, a general partner at one of Silicon Valley’s top tier venture firms Benchmark Capital, said that the late-stage market is the “most frothy” he’s ever seen since the late 1990s. Even though Facebook, Groupon and Zynga shares are still all underperforming relative to where they debuted at in their IPOs, growth-stage investors are still pouring capital into later-stage companies. “The late-stage private market continues to be the most frothy thing I’ve seen since the late 1990s,” he said on-stage in an interview with TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington. “I thought it was going to go away when you had these IPOs trading at fractions of the opening price, but if you have a company that people have selected as the ‘chosen one,’ you’ve got people knocking on your door.” Gurley said this has more to do with the supply of capital than the supply of companies. Basically, a lot of new participants like hedge funds have moved into late-stage funding, while other competing VC firms have scaled up with big growth funds. “Historically, this has been shown over time to be a bad thing,” he said. If companies take on generous amounts of funding, they may feel pressure to spend a lot of that on marketing. At the same time, the availability of growth funding on private markets may tempt companies to keep postponing an IPO past the point where they might miss their window if growth slows. Notably, Benchmark elected not to do a growth fund. When they raised for their seventh fund back in 2011, they raised $425 million plus $80 million for a “Founders Fund.” “We want to be an artisan business,” he said. He said when the firm tried to do a European fund a decade ago, they found that they were spending too much time managing offices in other countries. They even missed a deal when Gurley punted a company to a European partner and the founder felt insulted that he was passed off. That European arm is now Balderton Capital and Gurley adds, “They’ve done fine and they’ve had IPOs. We just found that we were spending less time doing what we love to do, which is help entrerepeneurs build great companies.” On the totally opposite end of the market, there’s a dearth of capital for seed-stage companies that want to progress to a Series A round. “There were so many new angel-funded

Exclusive: Brazil's Vale says signs accord to quit Argentine Potash project

By Sabrina Lorenzi

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Global miner Vale SA signed an agreement with the Argentine government on Friday that will allow the Brazilian company to leave the $6 billion Rio Colorado potash mining project, a company spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday.

The agreement could put an end to months of uncertainty for Vale , which suspended work on the fertilizer project in December and announced its intention to pull out in March.

Under the terms of the agreement, Vale's existing concession at the mine remains in place for up to four years, the spokeswoman said. In the meantime, Vale is free to seek a buyer or partner for the venture.

Between December and March, Vale sought and failed to get the Argentine government to approve tax breaks to help ease rising costs related to surging Argentine inflation and the country's tightly controlled official exchange rate.

Vale said the inflation and exchange rate could make the project unviable.

People familiar with Vale's plans have said the company, the world's second-biggest miner, planned to sell the project in efforts to recoup the $2.2 billion it has already spent on the mine and on railway and port improvements needed to move the potash to market.

In a conference call with analysts and investors on Thursday, Vale said it is seeking new potash projects in Brazil and abroad to replace the Rio Colorado project.

Since approving plans to pull out and seek a buyer for the project, Vale and the Argentine government have been at loggerheads over the fate of at least 6,500 jobs at the Rio Colorado site.

Despite the suspension, an Argentine court ordered Vale to maintain work sites and continue paying its workers.

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff said on Thursday, after meeting with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez in Buenos Aires, that she was confident Vale and Argentina would come to an agreement.

The Rio Colorado project includes an 800-km (500-mile) rail line from the mine in Mendoza province to Bahia Blanca, an Atlantic Ocean port.

Potash, a potassium salt, is a key fertilizer and is considered a strategic product for Brazil. While it is the world's largest producer of coffee, orange juice, sugar and beef and the No. 2 exporter of soybeans, Brazil must import the vast bulk of its fertilizers, including about 90 percent of its potash.

Potassium is one of three key plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorous.

Fashola, Jonathan should set up joint military task force ? Engr ...

By Ephraim Oseji
The security situation is becoming something else, although it is a national problem. The federal government needs to do something drastic to curb it. Until the government provide jobs and makes it easy for people to feed, then crime in Lagos and Nigeria will reduce.

I want to say that when Governor Buba Maruwa was the military administrator of Lagos State, he had to set up a joint military task force made up of the military, army, police etc.

*Suspected Kidnappers on Parade: From right: Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State; Mr. Tukur Bakori, Director of DSS, Edo State, and journalists during the parade of suspected kidnappers in Benin City, Edo State. Photo: Barnabas Uzosike.

He bought them patrol vans and made them patrol all parts of Lagos State day and night and also he asked for help from corporate organizations who also contributed their own quota by also providing funds for the purchase of patrol vans. Some may see that as being impossible now because it?s a democratic dispensation.

And I keep asking one question that what is? the military and others doing in the barracks? The Lagos State governor and the government of? the Federal Republic of Nigeria should set up a joint military task force to patrol the streets, discuss with the service chiefs and let them know why their men should be deployed to the streets of the country instead of sending troops to Mali which does not benefit us at all.

Government should create jobs ? Chika Godo

It is quite unfortunate that a thing like this is happening in Lagos because it remains the most peaceful state in the country. The root of this problem is unemployment. When I say unemployment I mean there are a lot of graduates and even those with masters degree who cannot get jobs.

So what do you want them to do because kidnapping have become very lucrative even more than the oil business. If you look at for example the kidnapping of the Ejigbo council boss, those who did that may be unemployed graduates and because they cannot feed.

They are looking for short cuts. I want to advise the Lagos state governor and the federal government to create jobs, if not crime rate will continue to be on the increase.

And again we don?t have a good president. If President Jonathan wants to be the best president ever, all he needs to do is to revive the dead sector like the NITEL, Steel companies, textile companies and create so many? other bodies, all these will help curb crime and kidnapping because it is if only if a man cannot feed himself or his family then he thinks evil.

If you suspect your neigbour, call the police ?Obinna Kalu

Kidnapping of the Ejigbo council boss of Lagos state was a sad event in the history of Lagos State because the state is a peaceful one made up of people from different tribes. This sad canker-worm must be checked closely or it will escalate.

The Fashola led administration has done a lot in terms of roads, hospitals but must improve in the area of security. This issue of kidnapping and crime is a responsibility of both the government and the individuals in a , community.

Everyone should be vigilant, once you suspect your neighbors and anybody on your street, you report the person to the police but people are afraid of the police because of their approach to issues and the Lagos state government should employ private security outfits to help it curb crime in Lagos.

Another issue is that we do not have intelligence in this country, if you pay some young men to go around day and night gathering information and pass back to the relevant authorities it will go a long way to help.

Employ private security outfits ?kenneth Okoh

The security situation in Lagos is becoming alarming compared to the past. To worsen it, they? now kidnap people in Lagos. Ha! It?s a sad development. The kidnap of the Ejigbo council boss, just imagine that a local government chairman is kidnapped, that means Lagos is not safe anymore. I want Governor Fashola to act fast. Let him seek the service of our local vigilante groups, the OPC and others.

Let each local government authority employ as many of them as possible and deploy them to their various localities but must also be checked to curb their excesses. Another fact is that for crime rate to reduce the government at both the local and federal levels should be able to create employment.

Just imagine a graduate who has been looking for job for more than 5 years now and the young man is tired. What do you want him to do? If he does not have the fear of God, then crime will be the next thing. So employment is a vital tool if the government wants to curb crime.

Minutes show Fed supports stimulus through midyear

(AP) ? A majority of Federal Reserve policymakers want to continue extraordinary bond purchases to help boost the U.S. economy at least through the middle of the year, according to minutes from the Fed's last meeting released Wednesday.

But many members indicated they want to slow and eventually end the program before the end of the year, as long as the job market and economy show sustained improvement. The Fed's purchases of about $85 billion a month in Treasury and mortgage bonds are intended to lower long-term interest rates and encourage more borrowing and spending.

The minutes of the Fed's March 19-20 meeting were released at 9 a.m. EDT ? five hours earlier than planned ? after the Fed inadvertently sent them a day earlier to congressional staffers and lobbyists.

"One gets the sense that many Fed policymakers are anxious to start paring back the size of the ... purchases as soon as the data allow," Dana Saporta, an economist at Credit Suisse, said in a note to clients.

Still, a weak employment report released Friday is likely to make policymakers even more supportive of keeping the measures in place for the foreseeable future.

The report showed employers added just 88,000 net jobs last month. That was the fewest in nine months and much lower than the average of 220,000 jobs a month created from November through February.

The unemployment rate dropped to a four-year low of 7.6 percent last month. However, the rate fell only because more people stopped looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

In its statement after the last meeting, the Fed said the economy had strengthened but still needed its efforts to help lower high unemployment. In addition to continuing the bond purchases, the Fed stuck by its plan to keep short-term interest rates at record lows at least until unemployment falls to 6.5 percent.

The minutes indicated that many of the Fed's members want to see sustained improvement in the job market ? from a wide range of economic indicators ? before making any decision to reduce the pace of purchases.

Stocks rose sharply after the minutes were released. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 16 points to 1,585 in midday trading ? above its all-time high of 1,576.09 set in October 2007. The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 119 points to 14,792.

The Fed made minutes public earlier on Wednesday after learning that about 100 congressional staffers and lobbyists received them at 2 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. They had been scheduled to be released at 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.

Fed spokesman David Skidmore said the Fed notified the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission about the mishap. The Fed also asked its inspector general to investigate its procedures for releasing the minutes.

"At this time we do not know if there was any trading related to the early distribution," Skidmore said. "Every indication at this time is that the early distribution of the minutes was entirely accidental."

John Nester, a spokesman for the SEC, declined to comment on the release of the minutes, beyond saying that the Fed contacted the SEC staff.

Several staff members of both the House Financial Services and Senate Banking committees were among those who received the minutes early.

The minutes showed a wide array of opinions and criteria for when to end the bond purchases, which have boosted the Fed's balance sheet to $3.2 trillion.

A few members want to end "relatively soon" the bond-purchase program. Those members say the costs likely outweigh the benefits. A few others saw the risks as increasing quickly and said the purchases would likely need to be reduced "before long."

Many members said an improved job market could lead them to slow purchases within a few months, and a few said economic conditions would likely justify continuing the program until late this year.

Sensational success in patients with major depression

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

Researchers from the Bonn University Hospital implanted pacemaker electrodes into the medial forebrain bundle in the brains of patients suffering from major depression with amazing results: In six out of seven patients, symptoms improved both considerably and rapidly. The method of Deep Brain Stimulation had already been tested on various structures within the brain, but with clearly lesser effect. The results of this new study have now been published in the renowned international journal "Biological Psychiatry."

After months of deep sadness, a first smile appears on a patient's face. For many years, she had suffered from major depression and tried to end her life several times. She had spent the past years mostly in a passive state on her couch; even watching TV was too much effort for her. Now this young woman has found her joie de vivre again, enjoys laughing and travelling. She and an additional six patients with treatment resistant depression participated in a study involving a novel method for addressing major depression at the Bonn University Hospital.

Considerable amelioration of depression within days

Prof. Dr. Volker Arnd Coenen, neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery (Klinik und Poliklinik f?r Neurochirurgie), implanted electrodes into the medial forebrain bundles in the brains of subjects suffering from major depression with the electrodes being connected to a brain pacemaker. The nerve cells were then stimulated by means of a weak electrical current, a method called Deep Brain Stimulation. In a matter of days, in six out of seven patients, symptoms such as anxiety, despondence, listlessness and joylessness had improved considerably. "Such sensational success both in terms of the strength of the effects, as well as the speed of the response has so far not been achieved with any other method," says Prof. Dr. Thomas E. Schl?pfer from the Bonn University Hospital Department of Psychiatry und Psychotherapy (Bonner Uniklinik f?r Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie).

Central part of the reward circuit

The medial forebrain bundle is a bundle of nerve fibers running from the deep-seated limbic system to the prefrontal cortex. In a certain place, the bundle is particularly narrow because the individual nerve fibers lie close together. "This is exactly the location in which we can have maximum effect using a minimum of current," explains Prof. Coenen, who is now the new head of the Freiburg University Hospital's Department of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (Abteilung Stereotaktische und Funktionelle Neurochirurgie am Universit?tsklinikum Freiburg). The medial forebrain bundle is a central part of a euphoria circuit belonging to the brain's reward system. What kind of effect stimulation exactly has on nerve cells is not yet known. But it obviously changes metabolic activity in the different brain centers.

Success clearly increased over that of earlier studies

The researchers have already shown in several studies that deep brain stimulation shows an amazing and?given the severity of the symptoms? unexpected degree of amelioration of symptoms in major depression. In those studies, however, the physicians had not implanted the electrodes into the medial forebrain bundle but instead into the nucleus accumbens, another part of the brain's reward system. This had resulted in clear and sustainable improvements in about 50 percent of subjects. "But in this new study, our results were even much better," says Prof. Schl?pfer. A clear improvement in complaints was found in 85 percent of patients, instead of the earlier 50 percent. In addition, stimulation was performed with lower current levels, and the effects showed within a few days, instead of after weeks.

Method's long-term success proven

"Obviously, we have now come closer to a critical structure within the brain that is responsible for major depression," says the psychiatrist from the Bonn University Hospital. Another cause for optimism among the group of physicians is that, since the study's completion, an eighth patient has also been treated successfully. The patients have been observed for a period of up to 18 month after the intervention. Prof. Schl?pfer reports, "The anti-depressive effect of deep brain stimulation within the medial forebrain bundle has not decreased during this period." This clearly indicates that the effects are not temporary. This method gives those who suffer from major depression reason to hope. However, it will take quite a bit of time for the new procedure to become part of standard therapy.

Social Media Marketing ? 50 Ways To Get More Shares On Social ...

50 Plus Ways To Get More Shares On Social Media MarketingSo the Holy Grail of social media marketing is to ?go viral? and get millions of views of one of your posts, videos, etc. What about instead if you tried to get more shares on the general posts you send out there?

I am not good at math but I am good at marketing and having one post that ?goes viral? is much less effective than having 100 posts that get shared at a much lower level but have a much broader reach. Some people who have had a message go viral spend the rest of time trying to duplicate that to no avail.

So what should you do? Try to get a broader reach by having people like, share or otherwise interact with your content. For each interaction, your social reach goes up and you have more and more chance that new and different people will share your ?stuff?.

So let?s get started!

Blatantly ask for the like or share

  • ?Like? if you agree, then ?Share? with others.

Post what people want

Now I am not a huge proponent of posting ?stuff for stuff?s sake?, but if you are here, you are probably trying to get a foothold of more likes, follows, connections or something else important and posting ?popular? content in and among your normal postings can help that!

  • Quotes from famous people
  • Quotes with pictures you make (these work great for me as I can use them on the Facebook AND Pinterest!)
  • Cats, everyone likes kitties!
  • Celebrities
  • Happy things ? I did a search to see if happy things are shared more than sad things, no results yet, could someone mathy please research this and get back to me?:)
  • Industry related INTERESTING information ? just found a great post for our Realtors to share that was houses made out of unusual things like an airplane!
  • Smart things ? my favorite place to find smart AND funny things is the ?I fucking love science? page on Facebook. With over 4 million likes, it renews my faith in humanity that smart, clever humor is okay too!

Post when it matters

Unless you are targeting Mountain time people (like I sometimes do), you should post all content at a relevant time for Eastern folks. In addition, I use these times as a guide not a hard and fast rule as sometimes you can be too cute for your own good and jump in when EVERYONE is doing it and miss out on the slower times? opportunities.

  • Twitter appears to like the afternoon the best with 5pm being the optimal time to get retweets, that said, noon and 6pm are also good times to tweet!1
  • On the Facebook, good times to post are noon and 7pm and one post every other day will increase sharing opportunities (I think this is because FB doesn?t show EVERY post you have to EVERY person who could see it. Because of this, you increase your chances of being shared more if you post less often.1

Don?t be shy

  • You should tweet out your blog posts at least 4 times for maximum exposure and sharing opportunities. I recommend using Hootsuite for this so that you can schedule them for the day you post, later the following day, a couple of days later and a week or so later, mixing up the times.2

Common courtesy

  • Sometimes it is hard to figure out who has shared your ?stuff? but if you see that someone has, make sure to acknowledge them by liking their page or profile, sending a message to thank them and sharing something of theirs!

Some places I used to research this article?

One final note, this is an article about legitimate ways to get more interaction with your friends and fans. It is intended to help my small business owners with their social media marketing and should in no way be confused for ?like farming? which a pox on society and a scammers dream.

New horse scare: 55,000 tons of meat recalled Europe-wide by Dutch authorities

Employees at Willy Selten Meat Wholesale in Oss, Netherlands, work on Feb. 15 after Dutch officials raided the factory believed to be mixing horse and beef and selling it as pure beef. On Wednesday, the Dutch government ordered it and another company to withdraw 55,000 tons of meat from the market.

By Gilbert Kreijger and Thomas Escritt, Reuters

AMSTERDAM -- Dutch food safety authorities have ordered the Europe-wide withdrawal of 55,000 tons of beef from sale over concerns that it might contain horse.

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority said in a statement on Wednesday it had told more than 130 Dutch processing firms to trace the meat, all of which had come from two Dutch wholesalers, and withdraw it.

The wholesalers involved were Wiljo Import and Export and Willy Selten Meat Wholesale.

"It might contain traces of horse meat, but we don't know for certain at the moment if this is the case," said a spokeswoman for the authority.

Inspectors examining Willy Selten's records had found that the origin of the meat it supplied was unclear, the authority said.

The authority said that meant it was impossible to confirm that slaughterhouses had been acting according to procedure. It said it did not know where the meat had ended up, but it could have been used in frozen products.

"The buyers have probably already processed the meat and sold it on," it said in a statement.

"They, in turn, are obliged to inform their own customers."

About 370 companies in other European countries have bought the meat, and the Dutch food authority has warned foreign counterparts about the recall via a European rapid alert system, it said.

It said there was no immediate suggestion of any danger to human health.

In January, tests in Ireland revealed that some beef products contained horse, triggering recalls of ready-made meals in several countries and damaging confidence in Europe's vast and complex food industry.

Trouble in penguin paradise? Research analyzes Antarctic ice flow

Apr. 9, 2013 ? University of Cincinnati student Shujie Wang has discovered that a good way to monitor the environmental health of Antarctica is to go with the flow -- the ice flow, that is.

It's an important parameter to track because as Antarctica's health goes, so goes the world's.

"The ice sheet in Antarctica is the largest fresh water reservoir on Earth, and if it were totally melted, the sea level would rise by more than 60 meters. So it is quite important to measure the ice mass loss there," says Wang, a doctoral student in geography in UC's McMicken College of Arts & Sciences.

Wang will present her research, "Analysis of Ice Flow Velocity Variations on the Antarctic Peninsula during 1986-2012 Based on Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing Image Time Series," at the Association of American Geographers annual meeting to be held April 9-13 in Los Angeles. The interdisciplinary forum is attended by more than 7,000 scientists from around the world and features an array of geography-related presentations, workshops and field trips.

Antarctica is 5.5 million square miles of windswept, mountainous ice desert. The fifth largest continent is covered in a sheet of ice that is on average more than a mile thick. Across this province of penguins, outlet glaciers and ice streams funnel chunks of ice into the ocean where they eventually melt in warmer waters. If the ice begins to melt at an abnormally high rate and the sea level rises, a chain reaction of negative ecological effects could take place worldwide.

For her research, Wang uses remote-sensing images recorded by satellites to gather data on Antarctica's ice motion. She's particularly interested in determining changes in the ice flow velocity, because the faster ice moves, the faster it's lost. By calculating that velocity at different time intervals, Wang hopes to further understand the process of ice motion and be able to predict changes to Antarctica's landscape. She's planning models that simulate the ice sheet dynamics and estimate any influence on the sea level.

"I hope to provide valuable research to the academia of global change studies," Wang says.

Additional contributors to Wang's research paper were Hongxing Liu (UC), Lei Wang (Louisiana State University) and Xia Li (Sun Yat-Sen University, China).

Funding for the research was provided by University Graduate Scholarship allocations from UC's Graduate School and the Department of Geography.

'Post-mortem' yields insight into Kepler's supernova

Apr. 8, 2013 ? An exploding star observed in 1604 by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler held a greater fraction of heavy elements than the sun, according to an analysis of X-ray observations from the Japan-led Suzaku satellite. The findings will help astronomers better understand the diversity of type Ia supernovae, an important class of stellar explosion used in probing the distant universe.

"The composition of the star, its environment, and the mechanism of the explosion may vary considerably among type Ia supernovae," said Sangwook Park, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Texas at Arlington. "By better understanding them, we can fine-tune our knowledge of the universe beyond our galaxy and improve cosmological models that depend on those measurements."

The best way to explore the star's makeup is to perform a kind of post-mortem examination on the shell of hot, rapidly expanding gas produced by the explosion. By identifying specific chemical signatures in the supernova remnant, astronomers can obtain a clearer picture of the composition of the star before it blew up.

"Kepler's supernova is one of the most recent type Ia explosions known in our galaxy, so it represents an essential link to improving our knowledge of these events," said Carles Badenes, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh.

Using the Suzaku satellite's X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS), the astronomers observed the remnant of Kepler's supernova in 2009 and 2011. With a total effective XIS exposure of more than two weeks, the X-ray spectrum reveals several faint emission features from highly ionized chromium, manganese and nickel in addition to a bright emission line from iron. The detection of all four elements was crucial for understanding the original star.

"Suzaku's XIS instrument is uniquely suited to this type of study thanks to its excellent energy resolution, high sensitivity and low background noise," said team member Koji Mori, an associate professor of applied physics at the University of Miyazaki, Japan.

Cosmologists regard type Ia supernovae as "standard candles" because they release similar amounts of energy. By comparing this standard to the observed peak brightness of a type Ia supernova, astronomers can pin down its distance. Their similarity stems from the fact that the exploding star is always a compact stellar remnant known as a white dwarf.

Although a white dwarf star is perfectly stable on its own, pair it with another white dwarf or a normal star and the situation eventually may turn volatile. The normal star may transfer gas onto the white dwarf, where it gradually accumulates. Or the orbits of binary white dwarfs may shrink until the two objects merge.

Either way, once a white dwarf begins tipping the scales at around 1.4 times the sun's mass, a supernova soon follows. Somewhere within the white dwarf, carbon nuclei begin merging together, forming heavier elements and releasing a vast amount of energy. This wave of nuclear fusion rapidly propagates throughout the star, ultimately shattering it in a brilliant explosion that can be detected billions of light-years away.

Astronomers can track some details of the white dwarf's composition by determining the abundance of certain trace elements, such as manganese, that formed during the explosion. Specifically, the ratio of manganese to chromium produced by the explosion turns out to be sensitive to the presence of a neutron-rich version of neon, called neon-22. Establishing the star's neon-22 content gives scientists a guide to the abundance of all other elements heavier than helium, which astronomers call "metals."

The findings provide strong evidence that the original white dwarf possessed roughly three times the amount of metals found in the sun. Progressive stellar generations seed interstellar gas with increasing proportions of metals. The remnant, which lies about 23,000 light-years away toward the constellation Ophiuchus, lies much closer to our galaxy's crowded central region than the sun does. There, star formation was probably more rapid and efficient. As a result, the star that blazed forth as Kepler's supernova likely formed out of material that already was enriched with a higher fraction of metals.

Park, Badenes, Mori and their colleagues discuss the findings in a paper scheduled for publication in the April 10 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters and now available online.

While the Suzaku results do not directly address which type of binary system triggered the supernova, they indicate that the white dwarf was probably no more than a billion years old when it exploded, or less than a quarter of the sun's current age.

"Theories indicate that the star's age and metal content affect the peak luminosity of type Ia supernovae," Park explained. "Younger stars likely produce brighter explosions than older ones, which is why understanding the spread of ages among type Ia supernovae is so important."

In 2011, astrophysicists from the United States and Australia won the Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery that the expansion of the universe is picking up speed, a conclusion based on measurements of type Ia supernovae. An enigmatic force called dark energy appears to be responsible for this acceleration, and understanding its nature is now a top science goal. Recent findings by the European Space Agency's Planck satellite reveal that dark energy makes up 68 percent of the universe.

Launched on July 10, 2005, Suzaku was developed at the Japanese Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), which is part of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in collaboration with NASA and other Japanese and U.S. institutions.

Calculated Risk: Tuesday: Small Business Confidence, Job Openings

by Bill McBride on 4/08/2013 09:24:00 PM

From Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke: Stress Testing Banks: What Have We Learned?

[T]he banking system is much stronger since the implementation of the SCAP four years ago, which in turn has contributed to the improvement in the overall economy. The use of supervisory stress tests--a practice now codified in statute--has helped foster these gains. Methodologically, stress tests are forward looking and focus on unlikely but plausible risks, as opposed to "normal" risks. Consequently, they complement more conventional capital and leverage ratios. The disclosure of the results of supervisory stress tests, coupled with firms' disclosures of their own stress test results, provide market participants deeper insight not only into the financial strength of each bank but also into the quality of its risk management and capital planning. Stress testing is also proving highly complementary to supervisors' monitoring and analysis of potential systemic risks. We will continue to make refinements to our implementation of stress testing and our CCAR process as we learn from experience.

As I have noted, one of the most important aspects of regular stress testing is that it forces banks (and their supervisors) to develop the capacity to quickly and accurately assess the enterprise-wide exposures of their institutions to diverse risks, and to use that information routinely to help ensure that they maintain adequate capital and liquidity. The development and ongoing refinement of that risk-management capacity is itself critical for protecting individual banks and the banking system, upon which the health of our economy depends.

I was an early advocate of stress testing, and I think these tests played a key role in understanding the impact of the financial crisis on large banks.

iMaze Lets You Turn Your Photos Into A Maze And Race Your Friends To The Finish

Screenshot_4_8_13_10_29_AMWhile visiting, and judging, the Photo Hack Day at Facebook headquarters yesterday, one of the more than 60 hacks presented in a two-minute format was iMaze. The team that put it together in just a little over a day was comprised of developers, some of whom were high-school students, and it ended up being one of the most polished apps coming out of the hackathon. With Aviary and Facebook putting on the event, some really cool things came out of it, but iMaze is one that just flat-out stuck with me. It’s simple: It turns your favorite photos into a maze. Once the maze is created, you can either make your way through it yourself or challenge your friend over the web in a real-time speed-test. Before we get to the app itself, the team geekily put together some stats on what went into making iMaze: 5 People 24 Hours 1304mg of Caffine 1,492 Lines of Code 194 GitHub Commits 12,920 Calories 3 APIs Impressive. Now to iMaze. Since you probably have a ton of photos on your computer or tossed about all over the web, iMaze uses Filepicker.io to let you pull in photos from Dropbox, Facebook, Flickr, Google Drive, Google Photos, Instagram or of course your machine. Once you upload the photo, you can use Aviary to edit it down before it’s turned into an interactive maze game that changes each time you upload a photo. Pick single player or invite a friend, and then compete with them in real-time. Now you’re ready to compete in getting all the way through this ZuckMaze by dragging the line with your mouse: Considering that this was a hack put together in a day, it’s pretty fun and well-designed. The iMaze team won third place overall, but I hope that they keep working on it, because it would be a fun Facebook game and app. Once in a while, I enjoy playing hangman or Tic Tac Toe, not because I’m a gamer, but because I like doing something while I chat with my friends. Considering that these mazes are built on top of your photos, it’s a nice way to reuse images from the past and start a fun discussion with your closest pals.

COLUMBIA, Mo. Although no exact formula for marital bliss exists, a University of Missouri researcher has found that husbands and wives are happier when they share household and child-rearing responsibilities. However, sharing responsibilities doesn't necessarily mean couples divide chores equally, said Adam Galovan, a doctoral student in the MU Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

"Sharing can mean something different to every couple," Galovan said. "It could be taking turns changing diapers or one parent watching the children while the other prepares dinner. Doing things together and having mutual, agreed-upon divisions of labor benefitted both spouses."

Galovan and his Brigham Young University and Utah State University colleagues surveyed 160 heterosexual couples to see how the parents divided household responsibilities and how those chores affected the husbands' and wives' relationships. The couples were married for an average of five years and had at least one child age five or younger. Most of the parents were between 25 and 30 years old, and about 40 percent of the women had full- or part-time jobs.

"The more wives perceived that husbands were engaged in routine family work tasks, the better the relationships were for both partners," Galovan said. "Wives in our study viewed father involvement and participation in household chores as related. Doing household chores and being engaged with the children seem to be important ways for husbands to connect with their wives, and that connection is related to better couple relationships."

The bonds between fathers and their children also contributed to couples' marital satisfaction, Galovan said.

"When wives felt their husbands were close to their children, both spouses reported better marriages," said Galovan. "The father-child bond was particularly important for wives."

Couples should realize that transitioning into parenthood requires an adjustment period, and it is normal for husbands and wives to feel stressed, Galovan said. To counteract the stress, he recommends that parents make each other a priority.

"Find ways to connect throughout the day, even if it's just doing dishes together or watching a movie," Galovan said. "These simple connections in daily life seem to enhance couples' marital satisfaction and improve the quality of their relationships."

Graham Isn't Afraid of Hillary; Malloy Calls LaPierre a Clown

Who's afraid of?the big, bad bat?Hillary Clinton? Not?Lindsay Graham, that's for sure. He thinks it's possible to take down the leading favorite to run for President on the Democratic ticket. "Yeah, she can be beat,"?Graham said on NBC's?Meet the Press. Graham said that "after eight years of President Obama," he thinks Republicans will be heading into 2016 as the favorites. But he's still taking the threat of a Clinton candidacy seriously, mind you. "Republicans underestimate her at their peril," he cautioned. Graham also took a moment to praise the President for how he's handled the North Korea situation so far, saying Obama has "acted responsibly." "I appreciate what this administration is doing - standing by our allies," he said.?

Connecticut Gov.?Dan Malloy?fought back against attacks from NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre on CNN's?State of the Union. LaPierre "reminds me of the clowns at the circus -- that's what he's paid to do," Malloy said. LaPierre criticized Malloy for passing gun legislation making background checks mandatory and placing?restrictions?on assault weapons.?"This guy is so out of whack, it's unbelievable," he said.

One person who is excited about a possibly Clinton run in 2016 is?Arianna Huffington. She's pretty sure that Clinton will reverse her public position and run for President. "She's obviously running," Huffington said on ABC's?This Week. But she does hope that Clinton takes more time away from the public spotlight to rest up and regenerate before jumping back into the busy schedule of someone hoping to run for President. "What I was hoping is that she would have been taken more time to become what she called herself 'untired,'"?Huffington said. Clinton said when she was leaving her position as Secretary of State that she wanted to sleep in for a change. "She hasn't given herself that time and I think that's sending a bad message to women, that the only way to succeed is to drive yourself to ground. After all, she collapsed. She had a concussion," Huffington said. "She could be an incredible leader in helping us do our life and our success differently, not just for women but for me," she added.

White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer did double duty appearing on ABC's This Week and Fox News Sunday this morning. Perhaps the most interesting things he said were about guns. Pfeiffer told Chris Wallace on Fox that the White House put forth its "ideal package" of gun legislation knowing that not all of it would pass. "When we put forward our package, [we believed] that this is the ideal package," he said. "We knew not all of it was going to pass right away." None of that legislation has passed, but the White House is negotiating with the Senate and working on a gun bill that could possibly see the floor. And that, Pfeiffer argued, was a sign the President has made more progress on guns than anyone in recent memory. "Where we are right now, there is a bill in the Senate, which is the most progress we have made legislatively in many years to try to address gun violence," Pfeiffer said. "The crux of that bill is what many advocates said is the most effective thing we can do, which is universal enforceable background checks and so, the question is, are we going to pass that bill? Or are Republicans going to block it?" On ABC, he addressed those Republicans directly. He chastised certain Senate Republicans for threatening to filibuster any gun legislation. "Now that the cameras are off and they're not forced to look the Newtown families in the face, now they want to make it harder and filibuster," Pfeiffer said. "If we have a simple up or down vote, we can get this done." Pfeiffer also spoke fairly briefly about North Korea on both shows. Wallace asked if the U.S. was giving in to North Korea's threats by postponing a Minutemen ballistic missile test scheduled for this week. "Absolutely not," Pfeiffer answered. "The onus is on North Korea to take the step back and meet their international obligations so they can undertake what they say is their number one goal, which is economic development." On This Week, Pfeiffer said he "wouldn't be surprised" if North Korea did a missile test within the next few days to see if their equipment can actually reach Guam.?

Sen. John McCain?and Sen. Chuck Schumer appeared on CBS' Face the Nation Sunday morning. McCain, who appeared alone before Schumer joined him, warned that things could get very real very quickly in the ongoing exchanged of threats between North Korea and the South and its western allies. "More than once wars have started by accident and this is a very serious situation,"?McCain said. Not that he's worried about the results, but it's still something to be concerned about. "South Korea would win, we would win if there was an all-out conflict," McCain said. "But the fact is North Korea could set Seoul on fire and that, obviously, would be a catastrophe of enormous proportions." On Kim, McCain's not really sure what to make of him. "I don't know what kind of game this young man is playing," he said. "It's obviously brinksmanship." Schumer was also cautious, saying that "especially with such an erratic leader," there's a chance things will go too far too soon. He called for China to step up and "put a little pressure on this North Korean regime." McCain and Schumer also talked about their collective confusion over the Republican attempts to filibuster any gun legislation that makes it to the Senate floor. "I don't understand it," McCain said. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand." McCain would prefer the Senators calling for a filibuster let the legislative process take its course. "What are we afraid of? [...] If this issue is as important as we all think it is, why not take it up and debate?"?McCain asked. "Everybody wants the same goal," McCain said, which to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, but he also thinks a discussion on background checks is "something that the American people and certainly Congress could be helped by if we have a vigorous debate and discussion." Schumer pleaded for his Senate colleagues to let the bill make to the floor, at the very least. "We certainly should be at least allowed to get on the floor and have a debate," he said. "Please let us go to the floor," he continued. "If we go to the floor, I'm still hopeful that what I call the sweet spot, background checks, can succeed."

McCain on North Korea:?

After Schumer joined the table and the two Senators talked about their upcoming immigration bill. They complimented each other's work on the bill. They're friends!

Former New Mexico governor and U.N. ambassador Bill Richardson explained that Kim Jong-Un is trying to save face with multiple audiences with his latest rounds of threats during his appearance on Meet the Press. "First, he's playing to the North Korean generals, they run the show -- the military," Richardson said. "He's playing to the Korean Worker's Party, the leadership there. Secondly, he's playing to his own people." He thinks the North's recent embarrassments in the press are central causes for Un's behavior, though not the only ones. "He got burned by that missile test that failed and he feels he has to buttress his domestic standing. And I think the third thing that he's doing is he's testing the new South Korean president.
