(5) Preparing For Fatherhood | T-Fun World

20120811-145421.jpg

So I know that T-Fun world has been on some crazy hiatus lately but I want to come back and share some new great stories that I think will summarize how I am currently feeling about my impending new life coming into this world.

1. Reading the baby books.

I have am actually really proud of myself for taking the time to read the baby books and actually found one that has been both humorous and knowledgeable. I also would like to point out that my wife has actually not read any of the baby books. I can?t blame her cause ?What To Expect When You Are Expecting? really freaked her out. It made her so terrified of the pregnancy. I read ?Dad Is Pregnant Too? which is really funny and is a good read. I found myself going back to it when I found some of the material related to what was going on in the pregnancy. Unlike that Satan?s Guide to Pregnancy that my wife was too sacred to read, it showed me that pregnancy was not beautiful but really gross. I have found that the gas, mood swings, and the vomiting go with the territory.

2. Setting up the baby?s room

I actually started this a few weeks ago thinking of what I wanted to do. We got some of the furniture from our friends and family. We got a killer changing table from my sister in law?s employer. We even got a bassinet from one of my friends at work. I was so excited. Now I am just trying to figure out what to do with our computer desk cause let?s face it, it will be hard to blog if I have to worry about waking the baby up. I also have to pack up a bookshelf and move it out so I can make room to put the dresser my father gave us. The only thing left to do is just get a crib. My wife and I are almost there.

3. Finding alternate foods for dinner.

This has been really hard cause my wife and I have always based most of our meals around chicken but since she has been pregnant I am having to find other meats then the bird. This is one of the reasons I have not posted hardly any new recipes on the blog lately. Since my wife has been pregnant I have been having to make things like pork chops, hamburgers, and hotdogs. If those fail we usually go out to dinner. The cravings so far have been for late night trips for ice cream. When I say cravings most of them have not been from just her. It gets really frustrating when she tells you that salad taste like dirt, or could you grill it outside cause the smell is making me sick, or can you not make that cause it made me vomit twice the other day. I hope that one day I get to have fried chicken again. Someday.

4. Taking care of my wife.

Like I have said before I have become a master of the ?duck and cover? method when I see the nostrils flaring and the smoke coming from her ears. The hardest things is never knowing what will set her off. A few weeks ago my house became a World War 3 war zone when I questioned my wife on why she wanted to throw a gender reveal party. It was bad and I am still picking my teeth off the floor but I will manage.

Side Note: Gender Reveal Parties are actually really cool but more on that a little later.

It has not only been dodging bullets when she is mad either. It has also been when she is sad or upset. I have been a huge advocate for the destruction of The Lifetime Movie Channel since the beginning of this pregnancy cause my wife will just sit there and cry the entire time. I ask her why she is cry and she just tells me she has no idea why. Its been an emotional roller coaster from day one and we are not even half done with this pregnancy. Other times she tells me she is unhappy with the way she looks and she is just so tired of feeling sick. I then have to remind her that she is not herself and that she will ok and to think of the bigger picture.

5. Finding time for myself

This has not been this hard. I always have a day to myself every week to get things done around the house, catch up with my shows on the DVR, and have lunch with my dad. It gives me the tim to go to the gym and to man stuff which is always important. Sometimes i wish I could go out with the guys and get a few drinks. Tonight I was actually invited to a free Def Leppard concert. I had to turn it down cause my wife really wanted to spend some time with me. I feel that I need to get these fun times in now cause soon I am going to have a baby to worry about. How bad does it look if you bring your baby to a bar? Real bad? I know. That was a dumb question.

6. Advice from other dads.

I have found a lot of awesome advice from some dads I started following on Twitter. Not only are these dads helpful but they are also so funny. I find that when i get nervous they are always there to say pregnancy does get better but the real adventure will start soon enough. When I doubt my parental skills they are always there to tell me that no dad is perfect and you will make mistakes. I needed this and glad that I found some people to relate to. The other great thing about is that they don?t know you so they have no reason not to be honest.

7. Go to every doctor?s visit.

I don?t feel I have to say much about this cause I am very lucky to be able to go to every doctor?s visit . I am very thankful that it works into our schedule. I think that it is really important to be there for my wife. To hold her hand as we get to listen to the baby?s heartbeat and to ask the doctor question that my wife may have forgotten to ask. It just works better for everyone if you are there.

These are just a few of the things I have been doing to get ready for the birth of my child. We are currently in the middle of week 17 of our pregnancy. We are almost to the halfway mark. I do have a list of things I am not looking forward to but I will share them at a later date.

Romney names Paul Ryan his No. 2

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate on Saturday, turning to the architect of a deeply conservative and intensely controversial long-term budget plan to remake Medicare and cut trillions in federal spending.

In the campaign to come, Republicans will present economic solutions "that are bold, specific and achievable," Romney said as he presented his political partner. "We offer our commitment to create 12 million new jobs and bring better take home pay to middle class families."

The two men basked in the cheers of supporters in their made-for-television debut on a ticket hoping to make President Barack Obama's first term his last. "I did not make a mistake with this guy," Romney exulted.

"I am deeply excited and honored to join you as your running mate," Ryan said in his first words at the podium." He said that together, Republicans would eliminate the country's "debt, doubt and despair."

He said that "Regrettably, President Obama has become part of the problem, and Mitt Romney is the solution" to an economy that has yet to make a strong recovery from the worst recession in decades.

The ticket made its debut at a naval museum in Norfolk, Va., the initial stop of a bus tour through four battleground states in as many days. The USS Wisconsin, berthed at the museum, was their bunting-draped backdrop, a symbol of the nation's military strength as well as an obvious reference to Ryan's home state.

First Romney, then Ryan, a generation younger than his patron, jogged down the ship's gangplank to the cheers of hundreds and the stirring soundtrack from the movie "Air Force One."

As his family came on stage, Ryan knelt to embrace his daughter and two sons before kissing his wife.

While word of Ryan's selection leaked late Friday night and was posted by the campaign to its phone app before the speeches, Obama's campaign withheld its reaction until the Republicans had spoken.

"The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid," Jim Messina, the president's campaign manager, said in a written statement.

"His plan would also end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors," he said.

Ryan's selection ? as well as Romney's own nomination ? will be ratified by delegates to the Republican National Convention that begins on Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla.

Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden will be nominated for a second term at the Democratic convention the following week.

One campaign official said Romney settled on Ryan on Aug. 1, more than a week ago, and informed Beth Myers, the longtime aide who had shepherded the secretive process that led to the selection. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details.

It was not known when Romney informed Ryan he wanted him on the ticket.

In making his pick, Romney bypassed other potential running mates, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Officials said he had called all four to notify them of his decision.

There was one unscripted moment, when Romney mistakenly introduced Ryan as the next president. He returned to the podium to say, "Every now and then I'm known to make a mistake. I didn't make a mistake with this guy. But I can tell you this, he is going to be the next vice president of the United States."

At 42, Ryan is a more than two decades younger than the 65-year-old Romney.

His conservative credentials are highly regarded by fellow Republican House members, while numerous polls during the primaries of winter and spring found that Romney's credentials were suspect among the party's core supporters.

A seven-term congressman, Ryan is chairman of the House Budget Committee, and primary author of conservative tax and spending blueprints that the tea party-infused Republican majority approved over vociferous Democratic opposition in 2011 and again in 2012.

They envision transforming Medicare into a program in which future seniors would receive government checks that they could use to purchase health insurance. Under the current program, the government directly pays doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.

Ryan and other supporters say the change is needed to prevent the program from financial calamity. Critics argue it would impose ever-increasing costs on seniors.

Other elements of the budget plan would cut projected spending for Medicaid, which provides health care for the poor, as well as food stamps, student loans and other social programs that Obama and Democrats have pledged to defend.

In all, it projected spending cuts of $5.3 trillion over a decade, and cut future projected deficits substantially.

It also envisions a far reaching overhaul of the tax code of the sort Romney has promised.

Romney and Ryan appeared unusually comfortable with each other when they campaigned together earlier in the year. The former governor eagerly shared the microphone with the younger man and they shared hamburgers at a fast food restaurant.

In making an endorsement before his state's primary last spring, Ryan said, "I picked who I think is going to be the next president of the United States ? I picked Mitt Romney. ... The moment is here. The country can be saved. It is not too late to get America back on the right track. ... It is not too late to save the American idea."

Romney was the subject of an April Fools prank in which Ryan played a role. Romney showed up at a supposed campaign event where he heard Ryan calling him "the next president of the United States" ? only to find the room nearly empty.

In recent days, conservative pundits have been urging Romney to choose Ryan in large part because of his authorship of a House-backed budget plan that seeks to curb overall spending on benefit programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps.

Republican National Committee finance chairman Ron Weiser of Michigan, said Friday night that Ryan's selection would help Romney win Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes in the fall. The state typically supports Democrats in presidential contests, and Obama won it handily four years ago.

Ryan has worked in Washington for much of his adult life, a contrast to Romney, who frequently emphasizes his experience in business.

The congressman worked as an aide in Congress, and also was a speechwriter for Jack Kemp, who years earlier had been one of the driving forces behind across-the-board tax cuts that were at the heart of Ronald Reagan's winning presidential campaign in 1980.

Ryan is also well-known for his fiendish physical fitness workouts.

His congressional district in southeast Wisconsin has something of a bipartisan voting record. Obama took 54 percent of the vote there in 2008, while the congressman received 64 percent in winning re-election.

Outside Ryan's home in Janesville, Wis., on Friday night, there was nothing to suggest that the residence belonged to a vice presidential candidate. An Associated Press reporter who knocked just before midnight got no answer. There was a light on in a first-floor room of the two-story brick home atop a hill.

Earlier this week, a Ryan adviser said the congressman, his wife and their three children were preparing for a weeklong Colorado vacation.

Most of Romney's staff learned of the planned announcement during a 10 p.m. EDT conference call Friday about an hour before the campaign issued a statement. The identity of Romney's pick was not disclosed during the call. The campaign had promised that first news of the selection would be delivered via a phone app.

Earlier in the day, Romney's campaign briefed reporters on the bus tour without mention of the impending vice presidential announcement.

The tour will take Romney through Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio. All are battlegrounds where Obama won in 2008. They hold a combined 75 electoral votes, of the 270 needed to win election.

Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney?s earnest opposite

In 1996, bedeviled by conservative doubts about his tax-cutting credentials, Bob Dole named Jack Kemp -- the fervent champion of free-market economics ? as his running mate. Sixteen years later, confronting lingering right-wing skepticism about his conservative pedigree, Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan ? a former Kemp speechwriter ? as his vice-presidential nominee.

Romney played against type in his surprise selection of the youthful seven-term Wisconsin congressman, who was considered a long-shot until the last few days. Rather than choosing a make-no-waves running mate like Ohio Sen. Rob Portman or former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Romney opted for a free-market ideologue over a political man for all seasons.

The veep choice is probably the best pre-election preview of how Romney would govern from the Oval Office. By going with Ryan -- whose well-publicized budget proposals put both traditional Medicare and Social Security in the cross-hairs ? Romney is signaling that he can change direction with stunning speed. Instead of a predictable recite-America-the-Beautiful campaign designed to make Barack Obama the issue, Romney has added policy heft and controversy to his I-can-create-jobs bromides.

Introducing Ryan in Norfolk on Saturday morning, Romney called him ?the next president of the United States.? (Obama made an analogous slip-up in 2008.) While it would take a Freudian to unpack what Romney meant subconsciously, it is safe to say that Ryan would provide the domestic agenda for Romney as the next president of the United States.

To Democrats, Paul Ryan is both literally and metaphorically two four-letter words. The Ryan budget, which passed the House in 2011 with only four dissenting Republican votes, would gradually turn Medicare into a voucher program and slash state funding for Medicaid. Although it is not in the House-passed plan, Ryan has also been a passionate advocate of private accounts for Social Security. The Romney-Ryan ticket is now on record as advocating the largest downsizing of popular federal programs since the ill-fated 1964 Barry Goldwater crusade.

What we still don?t have is an entirely reliable account of how and when Romney arrived at Ryan. Was he always the stealth favorite or was there a last-minute shift within the Mitt inner sanctum? The inside story will have to wait until the full how-a-great-man-makes-a-decision deliberate leaks from inside the Romney camp and, maybe, until the books published after the campaign.

The timing matters because there could be another less charitable interpretation of the route to Ryan ? Romney can be rolled. In the last few days, both the Wall Street Journal editorial page and the Weekly Standard enthusiastically endorsed Ryan for vice president. The New York Times captured the conservative mood with a Thursday headline: ?Romney Faces Pressure from Right to Put Ryan on Ticket.?

Since early indications are that Romney decided on Ryan in the last 10 days, that pressure may have arrived as a seismic shock in Romney headquarters. If Romney actually abandoned Portman or Pawlenty to placate the GOP base, it suggests that he would govern by always nervously looking over his right shoulder.

Critics have sniffed that Ryan lacks the foreign-policy pedigree that Romney as a former governor needs. But, with the exception of Portman?s short stint as George W. Bush?s trade czar, the same can be said of all the apparent GOP finalists. At least Ryan offers nearly 14 years of congressional experience, which is more than you can say about current and former governors like Pawlenty, Bobby Jindal and Chris Christie. And, by the way, the last ticket totally devoid of Washington credentials was the one nominated by the Republicans in 1948. And somehow, I suspect, Romney does not want to emulate Tom Dewey in grabbing defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Ryan is, in many ways, the antithesis of Romney. The 42-year-old congressman from Janesville has spent virtually his entire career in the public sector or in the think tank arena. Ryan has been a consistent true believer while Romney has -- to put it charitably -- followed a zigzag course.?

Back in 1998, during the Bill Clinton impeachment election, I came to Janesville to cover a hotly contested House race for an open seat featuring a 28-year-old wunderkind Republican named (what a coincidence) Paul Ryan. I recall the fledging candidate walking me around downtown Janesville to show the houses and the historical markers that trace his family?s influence on this small industrial city since the late nineteenth century.

But what stays with me was the earnestness and policy-oriented seriousness of Ryan, even then. When I asked him about Clinton?s conduct, he avoided the fire-breathing rhetoric that was a GOP staple that year and instead said softly, "I think the wrong way to go is to go down a partisan, bitter route." What he wanted to talk about was tax cutting and Jack Kemp with a dollop of Ayn Rand thrown in. When I suggested that his election over Democrat Lydia Spottswood would be interpreted as an endorsement of the Republican impeachment strategy, he replied, "I hope it isn't written that way. I hope it's interpreted that my ideas are better than hers.?

Despite the nearly three decades that separate them in age, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan embody the political principle that it is far better in career terms to reach Congress as a young man than someone more seasoned. (Biden was not yet 30 when he was elected to the Senate in 1972). For all their conflicting styles and ideologies, both vice-presidential candidates exude an enthusiasm for politics, the press and policy debates that Obama and Romney somehow lack.

In a recent interview with Ryan Lizza for a New Yorker profile, Ryan expressed his scorn for presidential candidates who ?run on vague platitudes and generalities.? With his bold vice-presidential pick, Romney has embraced the a-choice-not-an-echo theory of presidential politics.

If nothing else, putting Paul Ryan on the ticket guarantees that the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate will be destination television viewing. And however the politics sort themselves out, the 2012 presidential election has suddenly become interesting as well as merely important.?

Utah woman who mowed down husband with SUV blames Xanax

The Salt Lake City woman who allegedly broke her husband's legs while chasing him with her SUV and crashing into an office building says an anti-anxiety drug is to blame for her actions.

In a dramatic and public incident, all captured on surveillance video, Brenda White, 36, allegedly chased her husband, Jon White, through a parking garage in her Ford Explorer, plowed into a Salt Lake County office building and then crashed the vehicle into him.

"This SUV just drove into our building," a caller told a 911 dispatcher April 26, 2006. "[The driver is] chasing some guy down. The car is all the way inside the building. [The driver] went through, going like 70 miles an hour."

At the time, Jon White was dodging his estranged wife, with whom he was in the middle of what police describe as an "ugly divorce." In the end, he needed 63 stitches over his legs, arms and face.

Brenda was arrested and charged with attempted murder. She was later released on $500,000 bail.

Taking the witness stand Thursday in her own defense, Brenda White told the court that she had taken a handful of Xanax before heading to the Woodland Towers office building, and had heard her husband on his phone in the parking garage telling someone else that he loved her, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

A witness said in an interview, "We heard a crashing sound. And a guy came running by with an SUV following right behind him."

After Brenda White allegedly crashed into the Woodland Towers building, her husband's legs were broken. She told the court Thursday that the last thing she remembers is hearing her husband on the phone and, after that, being inside an office building, The Tribune reported.

"Had anybody come off those elevators or around a corner, they would have clearly been an innocent victim of this," police Sgt. Paul Jurosak said in an interview.

In a Utah courtroom this week, Brenda White's attorneys argued that she was suffering "extreme emotional distress" in the moments that she crashed through the building. They say she was suffering from panic attacks from problems with her husband, and lost control when she took too much Xanax.

It is a strategy they won't discuss during trial, but spoke about it on local television five years ago.

"If a jury were to hear all those factors, I think they could certainly empathize with her situation," defense attorney Jason Schatz said in 2007. "They would probably understand."

Before the car attack, Jon White alleges, his wife came to his office during lunch and played the song "Angry Johnny" by the singer and songwriter Poe, which includes the lyrics, "I wanna kill you/I wanna blow you away."

"And when that particular lyric came up, she would mimic a gun with her hands and point it at his head," an attorney for Jon White alleged.

Rare side effects for Xanax include outbursts of anger, delusions and even aggressive and bizarre behavior. But such symptoms are rare.

"Whether it's Xanax, alcohol or prescription medication, these really aren't complete defenses," ABC News legal analyst Dana Cole said. "So it's used to reduce the charge, not to get away with the crime."

If convicted, Brenda White faces five years to life in prison.

An Apple Peel a Day Keeps Obesity at Bay | Healthtipscafe-Health ...

An apple a day keeps the doctor away- we all know that!

What we did not know till now was that an apple peel a day can keep fat away!

Scientists at the University of Iowa have discovered that the apple peel is a rich natural source of ursolic acid, a waxy substance found in apple peel and several other fruits, which helps build up muscle and brown fat.

Apple peel: Your weight loss companion

Apple peel: Your weight loss companion

The results of this finding pioneered by Christopher Adams, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Iowa, were published in the journal PLoS ONE issue dated June 20.

?From previous work, we knew that ursolic acid increases muscle mass and strength in healthy mice, which is important because it might suggest a potential therapy for muscle wasting,? Adams says. ?In this study, we tested ursolic acid in mice on a high-fat diet?a mouse model of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Once again, ursolic acid increased skeletal muscle. Interestingly, it also reduced obesity, pre-diabetes, and fatty liver disease.

?Since muscle is very good at burning calories, the increased muscle in ursolic acid-treated mice may be sufficient to explain how ursolic acid reduces obesity. However, we were surprised to find that ursolic acid also increased brown fat, a fantastic calorie burner. This increase in brown fat may also help protect against obesity.?

Brown fat, as mentioned in a previous post, was supposed to be present only in infants till recently. It was believed that this fat disappears gradually as the infant grows up.

Also read: Beige Fat:The Third Type of Fat That Might Help Fight Obesity

Recent researches have, however, proved that brown fat does not disappear altogether. We retain very small quantities of it, mainly around the neck and between the shoulder blades.

As a part of a series of experiments, two groups of mice were taken. Both these groups were given an extremely fat rich diet, known to cause obesity. One group, however, was given a high dose of ursolic acid supplements. It was seen that this group burnt more calories and had lower obesity levels. The incidence of fatty liver disease and pre-diabetes was also lesser among these mice, which has led the researchers to conclude that ursolic acid helps fight obesity.

Studies have also showed a positive correlation between increased levels of brown fat and lower levels of obesity as well as lower blood sugar levels, causing the researchers to come to the conclusion that brown fat night actually be helpful in fighting both obesity and diabetes.

Since obesity and associated problems like diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and fatty liver disease are common global health concerns, the findings of this research are quite significant.

?Our study suggests that ursolic acid increases skeletal muscle and brown fat leading to increased calorie burning, which in turn protects against diet-induced obesity, pre-diabetes, and fatty liver disease,? Adams says. ?Brown fat is beneficial and people are trying to figure out ways to increase it. At this point, we don?t know how ursolic acid increases brown fat, or if it increases brown fat in healthy mice. And, most importantly, we don?t know if ursolic acid will benefit people. Our next step is to determine if ursolic acid can help patients.?

So, the next time you sink your teeth into crunchy, munchy apple, make sure to eat it with the peel on. Not only is it one of the best fat burning fruits itself, its peel is as good as the fruit itself, IF not better!!
