Watson supercomputer quits playing games, gets a job in medicine (Yahoo! News)

Quick-witted computer will offer advice on diagnosis and treatment

IBM's way-too-smart Watson supercomputer already?embarrassed a host of opponents on Jeopardy with its encyclopedic knowledge of, well, everything, but now its skills will be put to the test in a more meaningful way. We knew Watson's mega-brain was?headed for the world of medicine, and the details behind his first gig have just been revealed. The technology behind the quick-thinking computer has been commercially licensed to health insurer WellPoint, which plans to utilize it to improve patient care while cutting back on expense.

The?Wall Street Journal reports that IBM's new technology will first be put to use for patient treatment requests by quickly scanning a person's medical history and suggesting the best course of action. In the coming years, Wellpoint hopes to put Watson's immense database at the fingertips of doctors and nurses, providing a valuable ally in disease diagnosis and research.

Wellpoint is one of the largest health insurers in the world, and its Blue Cross Blue Shield plans cover over 34 million people in the United States. By simplifying and streamlining treatment, the savings that Watson provides will hopefully be passed on to consumers via lower premiums and better coverage. Watson will officially be implemented in early 2012.
