All Time Low bassist Zachary Merrick wore an eye-popping T-shirt in support of the Skate 4 Cancer cancer-prevention initiative during his band's set on November 18 at Irving Plaza in New York City. The shirt featured an explicit message that instantly raised awareness for an illness that affects thousands of women in New York State each year.
According to the New York State Department of Health, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in New York State.
Each year in New York, over 14,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and over 2,700 women die from the disease. It is estimated that one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her life.
Since All Time Low, a Baltimore-based pop punk quartet comprised of Merrick, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Alex Gaskarth, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Jack Barakat, and drummer Rian Dawson, has a legion of teenage girls in their fan base, the band is using its rising popularity amongst women to get the word out about breast cancer and the importance of self-exams.
During the November 18 performance at Irving Plaza, the band performed an uptempo set that rocked the capacity crowd of teenage girls into a frenzy.
Even more important than the pop punk stylings they delivered was the message they provided to the thousands of young girls in attendance.
Gaskarth and Barakat, who clearly take cues from Blink 182 with their hilarious between-song verbal interactions, jokingly told the New York crowd that they wanted to have a wet T-shirt contest when the crowd got sweaty a few songs into their set.
After a few girls in the crowd took the duo's comments as a cue to flash the band, Gaskarth and Barakat urged audience members to check out the Skate 4 Cancer self-exam booths set up in the Irving Plaza lobby.
Skate 4 Cancer, a non-profit organization founded in 2003 by skateboarder Rob Dyer, aims to get the word out about breast cancer prevention by emphasizing the importance of females giving themselves self-exams from a young age.
Skate 4 Cancer has toured with dozens of rock bands over the past 10 years, and the organization is teaming with All Time Low, Hit the Lights, the Summer Set, and the Downtown Fiction this winter.
Eric Holden, a New York resident, has been a fan of All Time Low since 2003. He has seen them live in concert on several occasions, and he attended the band's concert in New York City. Eric is also passionate about getting the word out about breast cancer self-exams.
