Abdominal porthole reveals how tumours come together

A window into the soul is poetic, but a window into the abdominal cavity may be more useful. A glass porthole implanted into the abdomen of mice has allowed researchers to observe the spread of cancer in intimate detail.

Tumour metastasis occurs when cancer cells spread from a primary tumour to other parts of the body, where they group together and form secondary tumours.

The migration of tumour cells is not well understood, partly because it is not easy to observe the spread of cancer inside the body. Advanced imaging techniques like multiphoton fluorescence microscopy only penetrate to a depth of half a millimetre or so ? far too small to look at common sites of metastasis, including organs such as the liver.

So Jacco van Rheenen at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and colleagues tried a new approach: implanting a 12-millimetre titanium ring containing a panel of glass into the abdominal wall of mice. "It's just like a window in a ship or a plane," says van Rheenen. This porthole gives a clear view of the internal organs, including the kidneys, small intestine and liver.

Tracking cancer

The team was then able to track individual tumour cells, marked with fluorescent dye, over the course of two weeks as they spread around the abdomen. Surprisingly, after the cells had migrated to their final destination ? but before they condensed into secondary tumours ? they appeared to move randomly about the local area. Nobody had realised that cancer cells move around like this before they form secondary tumours, says van Rheenen. "We found new stuff that we didn't imagine before."

The team used drugs to suppress the mobility of the cancer cells after they had reached their destination, and found that this led to a lower rate of tumour growth and fewer secondary tumours. "By suppressing the movement, you block progress to full metastasis," says van Rheenen.

"This is a great technical feat," says Peter Kuhn, who studies metastasis at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. "Putting windows into animals is an important development." But he cautions against drawing quick conclusions from animal models. "It is really important to distinguish between cancer in a mouse and cancer in a human."

ZTE launches Nubia range of high-end devices, announces Z5 quad-core smartphone

ZTE unveils highend Nubia mobile line, launches Z5 quadcore, 13megapixel, Italian design

ZTE's plan to reinvent itself as a high-end smartphone was missing one, crucial ingredient -- a European-sounding name that ended in "...ia" to brand its new range of top-level devices. That's why the company has just announced Nubia, which apparently means "cloudy" in Latin. It's also teased details of the first handset to arrive under this new cloud (geddit?), the Z5. This new 5-inch smartphone will have quad-core internals, a 13-megapixel camera and "Italian" design -- which makes us hope above hope that they hired Pininfarina and it'll come in Ferrari Red.

Web Promotion Advice that Works | Internet Marketing News ...

Get MORE Facebook Fans & Likes

Web promotion is an integral part of businesses nowadays. This is because it is crucial for a business to have an Internet presence in order to survive. It is true that some businesses can get by without being present on the Internet, but it is very seldom that one is found without a website or some sort of presence on the web. With this, web promotion is very important. This is because it allows businesses to market themselves to consumers all around the world. Long gone are the days when a business has to market to their local area or a single continent.

How to promote

Web promotion consists of a number of things. The most important of those tasks is networking. Without networking online, it is hard to have a leg to stand on. This means that a business is going to connect with other businesses and connect with customers through online venues. Of those online venues are social networking sites. Social networking sites have become a large part of web promotion because so many people visit these sites every single day.

Another important part of web promotion is article marketing. This is where a business will write or have someone write articles that are relevant to the products and services the business is offering. At the end of the articles is a resource box that allows the business to put in a short bio and a hyperlink to the website. This is valuable to drive traffic. The same is also done through press release directories. However, there are some directories that will allow hyperlinks throughout the text of the article in order for readers to link to the website.

The possibilities are endless

There are also other such forms of web promotion such as pay per click ads and blog marketing. There are so many ways to market a business on the Internet that it can make a person?s head spin. That is good, though, because that means a business can market in multiple ways and do it affordably. If one way doesn?t work, there is always another. This is why e-commerce has become so profitable for so many. People want to take care of business in their homes instead of out in the world, so they are turning to the web to help them with that.

Sizing up biomass from space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? The biomass stored in forests is thought to play a critical role in mitigating the catastrophic effects of global climate change. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Carbon Balance and Management has used Lidar data collected by the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) aboard the Ice Cloud and Elevation Satellite (ICESat) to accurately measure the biomass of California. When the ICESat2 is launched in 2016 this method will be able to monitor biomass and other global data changes.

As part of the global carbon cycle it is thought that global biomass acts as a carbon reservoir and consequently that deforestation and changes of land use contribute to global warming by liberating carbon from this reservoir.

Initiatives such as United Nations Collaborative Programmed on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD) are attempting to measure changes in forest carbon storage. But many countries do not have national forest inventories, and for those that do, methods and definitions used to monitor vegetation differ.

Presenting a new method of interpreting GLAS data, researchers from the US Forest Service, NASA and Colorado State University, have been able to develop a randomisation protocol which allows accurate estimates of total biomass.

Dr Sean Healey from the Rocky Mountain Research Station explained, "To sample the Lidar data we split the area to be evaluated up into a series of equal area, but not equal shape units, using a fractal-based approach. This provided us with a statistically solid base to our estimates. Each unit contained at least one GLAS shot and where there was more than one shot (on average each unit had 560 shots) only one was randomly chosen. We tested this method on California because the US Forest Inventory and Analysis program (FIA) maintains extensive forestry records including biomass which we could compare our method to."

The GLAS estimate of biomass for California was 211 Mg/ha -- equivalent to the FIA estimate (based on 10 years worth of recordings). Global application of this method on the GLAS data, or on data provided by ICESat2, would provide a standardized, timed, snapshot of biomass.

Dr Sean Healey continued, "In fact, this method. has been adopted for just this purpose by a partnership between scientists participating in the NASA Carbon Monitoring System pilot project and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Co-editor in Chief of Carbon Balance and Management, Dr Burke Hales said, "The GLAS approach shows promise in standardizing global forest biomass inventory, and in improving spatial and temporal coverage more quickly, easily, and most likely cheaply than traditional methods. We will probably need to rely on 'boots on the ground' estimates to refine the GLAS method for some time, but the addition of this approach will reduce the uncertainty currently overshadowing the inclusion of forest biomass in global carbon budgets."

Embrace Social Media

I just finished reading an article written by Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of the Virgin empire. Branson discusses the importance of embracing social media, and mentions that only 16% of CEOs participate in social media and only one in 1700 have a blog.

This post got me thinking. My brother Marc (this is Tyler writing) has handled most of our social media outreach and I?ve been happy to let him do that. He was in college when Facebook first came online and he embraced it right out of the gate. I?ve been a bit slower in adoption, but Branson?s words strike a chord in me and I realize I too need to be out there contributing to our company?s social media presence. I need to contribute to the community that we?ve built and fostered and reach out to our clients and potential clients more through the social media outlets.

Anyway, this article motivated me. Read it and let us know what you think about Branson?s post. Agree? Disagree?

?Anyone who thinks new technology isn?t going to keep changing the world has got their head in the sand. We are seeing progress every day online, and businesses are doing their level best to keep up and get ahead.

However, when you get to the very top of companies, there is a surprising lethargy about using the online tools already available: social media. Embracing social media isn?t just a bit of fun, it is a vital way to communicate, keep your ear to the ground and improve your business.

So why are only 16% of CEOs currently participating in social media??IBM?s 2012 Global CEO Study found that most CEOs are clearly not taking social media seriously. Only one of more than 1,700 respondents had their own blog! Some are on LinkedIn, fewer on?Twitter and even less on Facebook, Google+ and elsewhere on the web.

The study indicated that within five years social media will be the number two way to engage with customers (after face-to-face personal interaction). That?s a step in the right direction, but why wait five years? The internet will have changed all over again by then, and business is in danger of being left behind.

It isn?t just CEOs that can make the most of social media. Where possible, everyone within a company should be engaged in what is happening elsewhere within their business, and in the wider world. Social media is a great way to do this. Also, it can furnish a spirit of community, not least amongst global, widespread companies.

Nevertheless, like all other areas of business, CEOs have the opportunity to set the bar. By ignoring social networks, they are potentially missing a trick.

There are lots of business leaders utilising social media, and yours truly is only too happy to be counted among them. But the beauty of the web is that there is plenty of room for everyone. Does anybody else want to join the party? There?s only one rule for entry ? no ties allowed!?

Stock futures end short session lower; market closed Tuesday

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock index futures fell in a shortened session on Monday and cash equity trading was canceled as powerful Hurricane Sandy bore down on the U.S. East Coast, closing equity trading for Tuesday.

Monday's shutdown was the stock market's first weather-related closure in 27 years.

U.S. stock markets will remain closed on Tuesday, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange said, depending on the damage from the huge and dangerous storm on financial center New York City overnight and on Tuesday.

Index futures stopped trading electronically at 9:15 a.m. (1315 GMT), but will reopen at 7 p.m ET for the overnight session during European and Asian hours, closing again at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday morning.

NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq OMX Group said they made their decision in consultation with industry executives and regulators, and intend to reopen Wednesday, conditions permitting.

"It doesn't make sense to put people in harm's way or to only have half a market," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group in New York. "If just the electronic market was open, that wouldn't provide enough interest, with everything else still closed."

Sandy, a mammoth storm, took aim at the most densely populated U.S. Northeast Coast on Monday, forcing hundreds of thousands to seek higher ground, halting public transport and closing schools, businesses and government departments.

Italian political turmoil and Spanish hesitancy over seeking euro-zone assistance put the two countries on the front line of the region's debt crisis and back under market pressure on Monday as their leaders met in Madrid.

"We have an illiquid market, we have a risk-off situation from overseas, and we have some issues going on in the States with Sandy, so that is impacting things a little more than expected," said David Lutz, managing director of trading at Stifel Nicolaus Capital Markets in Baltimore.

S&P 500 futures fell 4.9 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 69 points and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 15.75 points.

Futures closed well off their session lows. S&P 500 futures fell more than 10 points at the intraday low.

The storm forced the closure of U.S. stock markets on Monday, the anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash.

Futures did not reopen as usual during the day, including the popular S&P 500 e-mini contract that lets smaller traders access index futures.

E-mini contracts typically trade around the clock, closing for just 45 minutes of each day.

A market closure for more than a day may start causing problems for investors who need to trade in and out of positions, investors said.

"If you go two days, you really start to create some serious financial stress for some players that need to get something done," said Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of Wells Capital Management in Minneapolis. "A two-day closure will create more stress, and therefore will allow electronic trading. That's my best guess."

CME Group closed its interest rate operations, including Treasury, Eurodollar and fed funds futures and options on futures markets on the trading floor at 12:00 noon on Monday in line with a closure of the cash market.

In Europe, Spanish and Italian bond yields rose and German Bund futures hit two-week highs on Monday, partly prompted by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's threat to bring down the Rome government.

Greece's foreign lenders have refused to make any further concessions on changes to labor laws contested by a junior coalition partner, the country's finance minister said on Sunday, prolonging an impasse on a crucial austerity package.

Athens has been locked in talks with its EU and IMF lenders on the austerity package for months, but a final agreement has been held up by the small Democratic Left party's refusal to back the new wage laws.

European shares fell for the first time in four sessions on Monday, hit by worries over weak company results. The FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> fell 0.3 percent to close at 1,093.57 points and the euro zone's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index <.stoxx50e> fell 0.7 percent to 2,478.84 points.

Canadian ETFs traded in Toronto that hold U.S. equities or are exposed to U.S. indexes, such as the Horizons S&P 500 Index C$ Hedged ETF , are available to trade. Some ETFs will be ineligible for subscriptions or redemptions. Horizons ETF warned that the bid/ask spread could be abnormally wide.

Giants beat Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings for sweep

DETROIT (AP) ? Smart pitching. Clutch hitting. Sharp fielding. Plus an MVP Panda.

All the right elements for a sweet World Series sweep for the San Francisco Giants.

Nearly knocked out in the playoffs time and time again, and finally pressed by the Detroit Tigers in Game 4, Pablo Sandoval and the Giants clinched their second title in three seasons Sunday night.

Marco Scutaro ? who else? ? delivered one more key hit this October, a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th inning that lifted the Giants to a 4-3 win.

"Detroit probably didn't know what it was in for," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "Our guys had a date with destiny."

On a night of biting cold, stiff breezes and some rain, the Giants combined the most important elements of championship baseball. After three straight wins that looked relatively easy, they sealed this victory when Sergio Romo got Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to look at strike three for the final out.

"Tonight was a battle," Giants star Buster Posey said. "And I think tonight was a fitting way for us to end it because those guys played hard. They didn't stop, and it's an unbelievable feeling."

Posey, the only player who was in the starting lineup when San Francisco beat Texas in the 2010 clincher, and the underdog Giants celebrated in the center of the diamond at Comerica Park.

They built toward this party all month, winning six elimination games this postseason. In the clubhouse, they hoisted the trophy, passed it around and shouted the name of each player who held it.

"World Series champions!" Giants outfielder Hunter Pence hollered.

A total team triumph.

"When pitching is your strength, you want a good defense," manager Bruce Bochy said. "That shows up every day. ... Hitting sometimes, it comes and goes. But as long as you can stay in more games, the better chance you have of winning them, and that's how we play."

Benched during the 2010 Series, Sandoval, nicknamed Kung Fu Panda, went 8 for 16, including a three-homer performance in Game 1.

"You learn," Sandoval said. "You learn from everything that happened in your career. ... We're working hard to enjoy this moment right now."

Cabrera delivered the first big hit for Detroit, interrupting San Francisco's run of dominant pitching with a two-run homer that blew over the right-field wall in the third.

Posey put the Giants ahead 3-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth and Delmon Young hit a tying home run in the bottom half.

It then became a matchup of bullpens, and the Giants prevailed.

Ryan Theriot led off the 10th with a single against Phil Coke, moved up on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice and scored on a shallow single by Scutaro, the MVP of the NL championship series. Center fielder Austin Jackson made a throw home, to no avail.

"That's what makes it so much special, the way we did it," Scutaro said. "We're always against the wall and my team, it just came through first series, second series and now we sweep the Tigers."

Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th for his third save of the Series.

The Giants finished the month with seven straight wins and their seventh Series championship. They handed the Tigers their seventh straight World Series loss dating to 2006.

"Obviously, there was no doubt about it. They swept us," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "So there was certainly no bad breaks, no fluke.

"Simple, they did better than we did," he said. "It was freaky. I would have never guessed we would have swept the Yankees and I would have never guessed the Giants would have swept us."

The Giants combined for a 1.42 ERA, outscored the Tigers 16-6 and held them to a .159 batting average.

"I think we never found our confidence at home plate," Cabrera said. "It was not the same game we played. We could not find our game in the World Series."

Bristled slumping Tigers slugger Prince Fielder: "This is not about me. This is about the team."

An NL team won the title for the third straight season, a run that hadn't occurred in 30 years. Some find the streak surprising, considering the AL's recent dominance in interleague play. Yet as every fan knows, the club that pitches best in the postseason usually prevails.

Until the end, the Tigers thought one big hit could shift the momentum. It was an all-too-familiar October lament ? Texas felt the same way when the Giants throttled it in 2010, and the Tigers knew the feeling when St. Louis wiped them out in 2006.

"For one, we didn't allow doubt to ever creep in," Pence said. "You know, the thing that made this team so special is just playing as a team, caring for each other. We had our backs against the wall and we knew it wasn't going to be easy. It's not supposed to be."

Howling winds made it feel much colder than the 44 degrees at gametime. Two wrappers blew across home plate after leadoff man Angel Pagan struck out, and fly balls played tricks in the breeze.

The Giants started with their pregame ritual. They clustered around Pence in the dugout, quickly turning into a bobbing, whooping, pulsing pack, showering themselves with sunflower seeds. A big league good-luck charm, Little League style.

"That was one of our mottos, and we went out there to enjoy every minute of it and it was hard earned. Just an incredible, incredible group of guys that fought for each other," Pence said.

Once again, San Francisco took an early lead. Pence hit a one-hop drive over the center-field fence for a double and Brandon Belt tripled on the next pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second.

The next inning, Cabrera gave the Tigers a reason to think this might be their night.

With two outs and a runner on first, Cabrera lofted an opposite-field fly to right ? off the bat, it looked like a routine out shy of the warning track. But with winds gusting over 25 mph, the ball kept carrying, Pence kept drifting toward the wall and the crowd kept getting louder.

Just like that, it was gone.

Cabrera's homer gave Detroit its first lead of the Series, ended its 20-inning scoreless streak and reaffirmed a pregame observation by Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline.

"The wind usually blows to right at this time of year," Kaline said.

In the fourth, Max Scherzer and catcher Gerald Laird teamed on a strike 'em out-throw 'em out double play.

Trailing for the first time since Game 4 of the NL championship series, Posey and the Giants put a dent in Detroit's optimism. Scutaro led off the sixth with a single and clapped all the way around the bases when Posey sent a shot that sailed just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-2 lead.

Detroit wasn't about to go quietly, however. Young, the ALCS MVP against the Yankees, made it 3-all with another opposite-field homer to right, this one a no-doubt drive.

Fielder finished 1 for 14 (.071) against the Giants without an RBI. Minus key hits, the Tigers remained without a title since 1984.

All 24 teams to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series have won it all. In fact, none of those matchups even reached a Game 6. This was the first sweep for an NL team since Cincinnati in 1990.

Working on nine days' rest and trying to extend the Tigers' season, Scherzer kept them close into the seventh. Often recognized for his eyes ? one is light blue, the other is brown ? he's also known as a solid postseason pitcher.

Ditto-plus for Matt Cain, who was working on a nearly perfect year.

The Giants' ace threw a perfect game in June, was the winning pitcher in the All-Star game in July, beat Cincinnati to clinch the division series and topped St. Louis in Game 7 of the NL championship series.

After they left, the relievers decided it.

Octavio Dotel shouted, "Yeah! Let's go!" toward his dugout after striking out Posey to end the eighth. In the bottom half, winning pitcher Jeremy Affeldt got around a leadoff walk when he struck out Cabrera, a flinching Fielder and Young.

Coke returned the favor in the top of the ninth, fanning the side. With Jose Valverde having lost his closer role during a shaky month, Coke stayed in for the 10th and faltered.

The Giants became the first champion that hit the fewest home runs in the majors since St. Louis in 1982. Sandoval's three drives in Game 1 started San Francisco's romp, and its dominant pitching took over from there.

The parade to a sweep masked the problems San Francisco overcame to get this far.

Closer Brian Wilson pitched only two innings before an elbow injury ended his year. All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games for a positive testosterone test, and not welcomed back when the ban ended. Two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum struggled and wound up in the bullpen.

Swept in a three-game set at Arizona to start the season, the Giants were floundering under .500 in mid-May. They soon hit their stride and, boosted by trade deadline deals for Scutaro and Pence, passed the Dodgers in the NL West for good in late August and posted 94 wins.

Getting past Cincinnati and St. Louis in the playoffs presented challenges. Down 2-0 in the best-of-five division series, they rallied for three straight victories in Cincinnati. Trailing the defending champion Cardinals 3-1 in the NLCS, they again took three in a row to advance, clinching in a driving rainstorm.

Six elimination games, six wins. Facing the Tigers, San Francisco proved it could play with a lead, too.

The Giants became the first NL team since the Big Red Machine in the mid-1970s to win two titles in a three-year span. Shut out for 56 years ? Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey and Barry Bonds never won it all ? their self-described "misfits" captured that elusive crown in 2010.

The Tigers' flop finished off a season in which Cabrera became baseball's first Triple Crown winner since 1967. Detroit overtook the White Sox in the final week to win the AL Central and wound up 88-74, the AL's seventh-best record.

NOTES: Detroit 2B Omar Infante broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Santiago Casilla in the ninth. ... Theriot and Laird had a nice reunion at the plate. They were St. Louis teammates last year when the Cardinals won the title. ... Laird started after Alex Avila was scratched. Avila's right arm was still sore after being hit by a foul tip in the opener. ... Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was at the game. ... Cabrera has reached base in all 24 of his postseason games with Detroit. ... Only two of the last nine World Series have gone longer than five games.

Simon Food Favourites: Halloween Dessert Degustation Pop Up ...

136 Raglan Street, Waterloo NSW 2017

Happy Hallo-sugar-ween Time

As soon as I saw the Halloween Dessert Degustation Event?($80) advertised I knew I had to be quick before it sold out due to the limited seats available. The second session seemed a better option so I could at least try and eat something savoury before arriving to counteract the sugar overload from dessert being served first. Billy Law (A Table For Two) was joined by Karen Low (Citrus & Candy) and Phuoc Huynh (Phuoc'n Delicious) in producing a six course menu of four sweet and two savoury dishes. First up was petit fours of?pineapple marshmallows, balsamic vinegar strawberry pate de fruit, and black sesame & charcoal powder macaron with pumpkin and Fromage blue cheese filling. The blue cheese macaron was the most challenging for me to eat being so different but I thought Billy managed to balance the flavours well.?Phuoc's Deconstructed Apple Crumble?was enjoyable although I somehow wished it was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or double whipped cream to help bind with the?apple and green tea sorbet and candy popping crumble. By the time?Karen's Chocolate Parfait with Fisherman's Friend chocolate dirt?was served my sugar overload hit red. The dish was enjoyable and it didn't need too much of the chocolate dirt to appreciate its minty flavour. To match the Halloween theme I thought a few mint leafs and some white jelly babies could have created a creepy cemetery scene of zombies.

Thankfully?savoury dishes were served next which they didn't do in the first session. Mexican smoked pulled pork was tender and the Asian style chilli and soy lamb ribs was very flavoursome and both went nicely with the sides of balsamic braised red cabbage and cauliflower puree. The Pumpkin soup with red pepper oil was good and the?pork crackles perfectly crunchy. The soup with crackles would have been good as the first dish as an amuse-bouche to help line the stomach before the onslaught of sweet to follow. For those who were still craving more sweets the?'Snow White' by Billy would have done the job. Seeing all the white chocolate domes reminded me of a scene in Alien where they're about to hatch. Hot raspberry coulis was poured over the dome to melt it away before eating. It visually looked like a scary eye ball decaying in front of you ? great for the Halloween theme. All that was missing was a few black licorice spiders sitting around the plate and some green jelly maggots. I loved how so many people took the time and effort to dress up which I sadly chose to be boring and didn't ? maybe next time.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:

PROS:?Fun atmosphere, Interesting venue, Intimate setting, Open kitchen to watch the cooks in action, Most guests actually made an effort dressing up (except me), No shortage of food

CONS:?Starting with dessert can be heavy going on the stomach, Cocktails seemed to take a while to make but had very cool names and well-presented

MUST TRY:?Black sesame & charcoal powder macaron with pumpkin and Fromage blue cheese filling at least once to challenge the taste buds, Dressing up next time
VERDICT: For dessert lovers there was no shortage of sugary delights but a challenge for those who prefer eating savoury dishes before dessert

Election season is about over, and I'm glad | The Social Silo

I keep hearing from people who say they?ll be glad to have the elections done and over with after Nov. 6, and I?ve got to admit, I am one of those.

I am tired of all the literature I keep receiving in the mail. That?s an understatement, I am downright sick of it! I have a cardboard box set underneath my mailbox and each day when I check my mail, I drop three-fourths of it into the box.

I kind of wonder if my house?s previous owner might have been a political party donor, because I have never received as much voter mail as I have this year.

And the signs in peoples yards are getting a little old, as well. They were interesting at first, and some made me think while others made me laugh. I don?t have any political signs in my own yard and for good reason. It would not be wise for a reporter to report on the news, and also tell people who to vote for.

The good side

But what I do appreciate is the opportunity to consider and weigh the different candidates ? the democracy we have that allows us to choose who we feel is best suited for the job.

I?m one of those people who enjoys the presidential debates, because I like to see the candidates speak their mind and tell us where they stand. I heard some complaints about people?s favorite shows being interrupted, but me feeling was, oh well. It can wait.

The election season also has some economic benefits. We often hear about how much the candidates spend to get elected and it?s often presented as a negative.

Maybe some of it is, but I also look at the amount of money the candidates pump into local economies by buying advertisements, attracting crowds and employing campaign staff.

In a few days the vice president and speaker of the house will both be speaking in my own town, and I?ve got to think that will be a god thing for some of the local businesses, where people will shop and dine, and talk about what they see.

Of course, there will also be a tremendous amount of security and a price tag associated with that, as well. I?ve heard of some major traffic issues in Cleveland and Akron this year, because of candidates? repeat visits to those cities and the need for security.

The presidential candidates have kind of made Ohio their second home recently, and I suppose when you consider the importance of the state?s vote, it makes sense. The nice thing is, if you want to see one of them speak, you?ve had your share of chances by now.

But no doubt, it will still be good to see things settle down after next week. And it will be good to get out and vote, and help decide where we go the next four years.

Rare ladybug in Montana behaves like a turtle

Rare ladybug: The 'headless' ladybug is a new genus that can tuck its head in its throat. How rare is it? Only two of the bizarre-looking ladybird beetles have ever been collected, a male in Montana and a female in Idaho.

The newly discovered insect tucks its head into its throat - making it not only a new species but an entirely new genus, or larger classification of plants and animals.

Ross Winton captured the insect in 2009 in traps he set in a sand dune while an entomology graduate student at Montana State University. Winton, now a wildlife technician in Idaho, at first thought he had parts of an ant but then discovered the bug can hide its head, much like a turtle ducking into its shell.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

Winton sent his discovery to scientists in Australia working on this group of insects and the headless ladybug was formally described in a recent issue of the peer-reviewed journal Systematic Entomology, a publication of the Royal Entomological Society.

Just two specimens of the tan, pinhead-sized ladybugs, also known as ladybird beetles, have ever been collected, a male in Montana and a female in Idaho, scientists said, making it the rarest species in the United States.

Entomologists historically used males to describe beetle species so the credit for the new discovery went to Winton.

However, the new species - Allenius iviei - was named after his former professor and Montana State University entomologist Michael Ivie.

The insect, with the proposed common name "Winton's Ladybird Beetle," may prey on aphids and other plant pests.

"The species is very unusual not only because of its small size, unique habitat and rarity, but the fact that its head is pulled back into a tube in its thorax makes its biology quite a mystery," Ivie told Montana State University News Service.. "It was so unique that it was placed, along with another new species known from Baja California, in a new genus. While discovery of a new species of beetle in the USA is not an everyday event, a completely new genus is quite rare."

He said it was unclear why the beetle slips its head into a tube in its midsection.
"It's a whole new kind of ladybug. Whatever this does, it is very specialized. It's quite the exciting little beast," Ivie said.

Biden Flubs VA Senate Candidate Tim Kaine's Name

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Vice President Joe Biden mixed up the name of the Democratic Senate candidate in Virginia today, calling him by the wrong first name not once, but twice.

"I want to tell you, it's good to be in a state that's going to be represented by Tim Kaine. What a guy! There is a decent honorable man. That man has more integrity in his little finger than most people have in their whole body. I'm a big Tom Kaine fan, a big Tom Kaine fan," Biden said at the Lynchburg City Armory.

In May, the vice president headlined a fundraiser for Kaine, a former governor of Virginia who is running for the Senate seat in Virginia against Republican George Allen, also a former Virginia governor. Kaine also served as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011.

The Romney campaign was quick to highlight the vice president's flub, circulating a video of the forgetful moment on Twitter.

"Vice President Biden forgot the name of his own Virginia Democratic Senate nominee and he wants voters to forget about President Obama's failed economic policies and lack of a real agenda for a second term," Ryan Williams, spokesman for Romney, said in a statement.

"Once again, Mitt Romney's campaign is showing their focus on the big things - like one letter in Tim Kaine's name. If they put as much time and effort into their policies, maybe we'd finally have an answer for how they'd pay for $5 trillion in tax cuts weighted to the very wealthy," Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said in a statement.

Earlier in the week, Biden mistakenly said he was in Iowa while campaigning in Ohio.

Biden, who was accompanied by his wife Dr. Jill Biden, initially was scheduled to hold an additional event in Virginia Beach, Va., today, but the campaign cancelled the event "out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm."

The vice president was supposed to be joined today by his son Beau, the attorney general of Delaware and a member of the Delaware National Guard, but Beau Biden had to return home to Delaware to help the National Guard prepare for the impending storm.

"On behalf of our son Beau, he's the attorney general of Delaware and a national guard member, he was literally - drove down from Wilmington, was sitting in Air Force 2 as we were about to take off, and we're in the car coming from the residence to the plane. He called me and said 'Dad, the governor just called up the National Guard, I'm going home.' So he apologizes for not being here, he wanted to be here," Biden said.

Biden spoke to a crowd of 1,500, according to the city's deputy fire marshal, and railed against what he said was the Republican ticket's flip-flopping, saying Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan are hoping voters will have "amnesia" on Election Day.

"And now the governor is running away from everything he said in the last year and a half and the congressman is running away from everything he voted for. I mean I'm not making this up. This is real," Biden said. "They're counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia on November the 6 th."

Boycotting Lil Reese?... Cut It Out! By Evanka Williamson | Global ...

Oh Lil Reese...

Before I get into the matter at hand, I want to state that in no way shape or form do I condone abuse against women or violence in general, but I do feel the need to point out that it is an ugly reality of our country, specifically in every hood and in every inner city of this nation.

DETAILS: Lil Reese's Victim, Tiairah Marie, Responds To Violent Video

Recently a video of Chief Keef?s partner and fellow 300 crew member hit the web, and he was captured brutally beating a girl down to the ground. This caused a major outcry. Some folks have gone to the step of proclaiming a boycott against the artist and people in the music industry are now refusing to play his music.

A-Trak, renowned DJ and owner of the label Fools Gold, took to his Twitter to say:

And in another tweet that has since been deleted, A-Trak said in conversation with rapper Chase N Cashe:

This is one of many similar reactions that want to banish Lil Reese, and exile the teenager from society. In the moment of reading A-Tak's tweet I realized that a lot of people are disconnected and don?t understand that? sh*t is real!

This clip that we saw is something that goes down every day! Violence and misogynistic behavior has been in hip-hop for decades and still is. Did we all think that it was all just lyrics all this time?

I'm sure DMX, N.W.A, Mobb Deep, Notorious B.I.G or Tupac weren?t playing pretend when they said things like:

?Goin' off on a motherfucker like that with a gat that's pointed at yo' ass. So give it up smooth Ain't no tellin' when I'm down for a jack move ?

Or when they said:

?B*tches get stripped down for they earrings and bangles and when I rock her and drop her I'm taking her door knockers and if she's resistant "baka! baka! baka!"

We have been nodding our head to these classics for years. We don?t boycott them.

The best rapper alive, Jay-Z, super mogul, part owner of the Brooklyn Nets, head of Roc Nation and more, admitted to shooting his own brother in the shoulder and if you recall, he also stabbed a producer in a nightclub for leaking Vol.3...Life and Times of S. Carter.

We definitely still play Hov?s music.

Is the fact that there wasn?t a video of any of those actions to show us play by play of their behavior that we haven?t had the urge to stand up against violence these past years?

Now, while it may sound like I?m condoning brutality, trust that is not the case, instead I would just like to suggest another option for those so quick to dismiss Lil Reese.

He is clearly a product of his environment, an environment that exists in our country. The South Side of Chicago, like many inner cities, has nothing for these kids to productively do with their time. There are barely any afterschool programs and more often than not, they are living in a single-parent home, with a working guardian who likely does not have the time to constantly shield their children from the drugs and gangs right outside of their front door.

Is it so surprising that kids like Lil Reese could care less about life, or the consequences of their actions when the world seems to not care about them?

I?m aware that hip-hop has become so mainstream that it is looked at as entertainment and while some of it may be "Superbass"-ed out, some of it is also not just a show. It is an art form that also actually depicts real things that many are dealing with and living day to day. Lil Reese and his homie Chief Keef may be major label signed artists right now, but they also represent millions of young people across the nation. Instead of dismissing these kids and turning our backs on them, why don?t we reach out to them? Perhaps offer them some guidance and more importantly, some understanding.

I?d like to close this with words from ?Say Hello? by Jigga Man himself:?

We ain't thugs for the sake of just being thugs

Nobody do that where we grew at, n*gga, DUH!

The poverty line, we not above

So out come the mask and gloves cause we ain't feelin' the love

We ain't doing crime for the sake of doing crime

We movin' dimes cause we ain't doin' fine

One out of three of us is locked up doing time

You know what that type of shit can do to a n*gga mind?

Somehow someone like Jay-Z was able to overcome the cards he was dealt to become a respectful human being who has learned from his mistakes, and I?m sure with the right opportunities and support, so can all of the Lil Reeses of the world, so don?t turn your back on them.

Show love!

Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to app store, bumps minimum price to 089 in Europe

After announcing slightly under par financials, Apple has added more ways it can be paid for apps, though it also bumped the minimum freight to get one across Europe. The new lowest price users in France, Germany, Italy and other nations "over there" can pay for an app is now €0.89, a euro-dime bump from before -- apparently due to the weak euro and local tax hikes. On the other hand, Cupertino also added more currencies accepted at its store: South African Rand, Turkish Lira, Russian Rubles, Indian Rupees, Isreali New Shekel's, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Indonesian Rupish and UAE Dirham can all now be used to pay. Apple has tinkered with its prices before in varying amounts overseas depending on the nation, so you may want to check your own country's App Store for the news -- bad or good.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Set to Return as Conan

Arnold Schwarzenegger Conan

Poor Jason Momoa. Just a year after he helped reboot the Conan the Barbarian franchise, original Conan Arnold Schwarzenegger and Universal Pictures have struck a deal to reboot the reboot, putting Arnie back in the role of the muscled, sword-swinging warrior.

Deadline reports that Paradox Entertainment's Fredrik Malmberg and Chris Morgan will produce the re-reboot (Un-boot? Retro-boot?) The Legend of Conan with Morgan scripting. The idea is to catch up with Schwarzenegger's older Conan years after his original heroic ascent, whose challenges will include "dealing with age."

?It?s that Nordic Viking mythic guy who has played the role of king, warrior, soldier and mercenary, and who has bedded more women than anyone, nearing the last cycle of his life. He knows he?ll be going to Valhalla, and wants to go out with a good battle," Malmberg said.

The sequel will directly follow 1982's Conan the Barbarian but may even ignore that film's 1984 sequel, Conan the Destroyer. Said Morgan, screenwriter of four Fast & Furious films, Wanted, Cellular, and the upcoming Universal epic 47 Ronin: "We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan?s Unforgiven."

Yes, think of this indeed. Then tell me your thoughts in the comments below as we all imagine the 65-year-old Arnold slipping into that fur-lined barbarian banana hammock once more.

Chris Brown, Karrueche Tran Pregnancy Claims - Entertainmentwise

Close friend denies pregnancy...

Chris Brown, Karrueche Tran Pregnancy Claims 'F**ked Up', According To Sources

Photo: wenn

It was claimed earlier this week that Chris Brown's former girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, is two months pregnant with the rapper's baby but now a source has denied the rumours, insisting that she had been drinking and smoking as recently as two days ago.

A source told MediaTakeOut.com: "Kae wanted to start a family with Chris, she thought he wanted that too . . . then this [Rihanna mess] started. Right now she's confused, but she still wants Chris in her life, and their child's."

The couple broke up at the start of this month following a two year romance, with Brown's developing relationship with former flame Rihanna reportedly behind the split. Earlier this week though the Vietnamese model was spotted outside of his LA home, sparking rumours of a reconciliation. Soon after rumours of a pregnancy began. But a source close to Tran has denied any baby, claiming she has been smoking and drinking as normal.

?I don?t think she?s pregnant but if she is, she?s hasn?t told me. I don?t think she is though because she?s been drinking and she smokes sometimes too so that?s not something a pregnant girl would do,? the source told HollywoodLife.

This is backed up by a tweet the pretty brunette sent on Tuesday that said: ?much love to El Cartel Tequila for sending a bottle tonight!?

The couple were photographed coming out of the singer's house before heading to the recording studio together, only days after Brown was pictured kissing Rihanna at a Hollywood party. Brown admitted when he broke up with Tran that Rihanna had been a factor in their split.

Saying in a statement to the media: ?I have decided to be single to focus on my career. I love Karrueche very much but I don?t want to see her hurt over my friendship with Rihanna. I?d rather be single allowing us to both be happy in our lives.?

The source went on to say they hope the pregnancy rumour isn't true, for Tran's sake.

?I would hope she isn?t pregnant either too. That would be f?ed up because all that went down with Chris,? the insider added.

?I highly doubt that she is but if she were, I mean?. I wouldn?t blame her for hiding it. He did her dirty and now she?s carrying his kid.

Obama zings Trump on 'Tonight Show'

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Apparently President Barack Obama did hear about Donald Trump's huuuge announcement.?"This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama joked Wednesday on "The Tonight Show," when Jay Leno -- comparing the situation to himself and David Letterman -- asked about Trump, who earlier today offered to donate $5 million to charity in exchange for a look at the president's college and passport records.

"We had constant run-ins on the soccer field," Obama continued as Leno mimed notching a point down for the commander-in-chief.

Clint Eastwood stars in a new, chair-free Romney campaign ad

"He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over."

And, as it turns out, the two have never even met.

Speaking of the first lady, check out some of Michelle Obama's most fashionable moments

Leno also quizzed Obama about his much-criticized performance in his first debate against Mitt Romney.

Obama's performance in the third presidential debate made Lindsay Lohan "proud"

"The truth is, this is not a natural way of communicating," Obama explained. "You don't sit next to somebody and have an extended argument with them like that.... With Michelle, I just concede every point. That's why we celebrated our 20th anniversary."

"There are worse things that can happen than forgetting to give your wife a gift," he cracked.

But when discussing his plan to vote early when he visits Illinois on his "48-hour campaign marathon extravaganza" this week, it didn't sound like he's too far in the dog house with the first lady, noting, "Michelle told me she voted for me."

See how the stars reacted to the final presidential debate

And, good news for trick-or-treaters on Pennsylvania Avenue who may have received fruit last year at the behest of Michelle Obama:?"It is an election year, so candy for everybody," Obama announced. "If anybody comes from Ohio to the White House, they will get a Hershey bar about this big," he added, holding his hands far apart.

Finally, the president was asked by a fan who submitted a question via Facebook if there was a cure for Romnesia.
