Just recently, I was given an opportunity to take one of my sons to see the Indianapolis Colts play the Green Bay Packers at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.? We arrived a little early since we had never been there before and wanted to look around a little before the game started.? Being a security guy, my eye caught a few things that prompted me to write this article.
I have stated many times on this website that there is no such thing as 100% security, and my observations while at the Lucas Oil Stadium confirm that.? Outside the stadium before the gates? opened, there was a very large police presence.? This included teams using bomb-sniffing dogs as well as handheld sensors to detect, I presume, possible explosives and other substances.? From all appearances, most people would state that they have good security.
In this article, I will present some of the security issues inherent to the stadium as well as personal security issues of those who attended the event.? I will also note a few more extreme security threats that could present problems when Lucas Oil Stadium hosts the Super Bowl this season (i.e 2012).
Security Observations
The following observations came to me as we walked around the stadium or while watching the game;? they are not intended to be a complete security evaluation or assessment.? Any business (large or small) should have security assessments done on a regular basis to make sure their security measures keep up with their security needs!
- When the gates first opened, we observed stadium personnel patting down those attending the game as they went through the gate.? They also looked in all bags that were carried into the stadium.? While this seems like a good security measure, especially since there were no metal detectors or other devices to detect weapons, the pat-down only included under the arms and around the waist.? It would not be hard to bring in contraband, including weapons, with such a limited search.
- Exterior doors leading out to the stairwell exits from the luxury suites were secured in such a way that it would have been easy to bypass the locks and gain entry quickly.? Since most high- risk targets would most likely be in luxury suites, the stadium should ensure that it is not easy to gain access to such areas.
- The Lucas Oil Stadium is state-of-the-art in that the roof and one end of the stadium can be opened.? The far end of the stadium has a very large sliding window that gives spectators a beautiful view when it is open.? As I was sitting there enjoying the view, though, I thought? about the different types of possible security attacks that could be devised with this type of setup, especially during a high profile event at the stadium.? Since I do not want to give anyone specific ideas I will not go into the possible scenarios that came to mind while sitting in the stadium.
- My last observation is one that business people especially should be aware of.? There were two men sitting in front of us at the game who both used their smartphones throughout the game. The one man took some pictures of the event when it first started and decided to post them on Facebook using his phone.? His phone had an on-screen keyboard that enlarged each letter as he typed it.? With a little better memory, I could have easily determined his Facebook login information (including password) by simply looking over his shoulder (shoulder surfing).? The second man sent and received a variety of text messages throughout the game, and it was not hard at all to read them as he read or responded to his text messages.? This shoulder surfing can be a threat to your business information.? When communicating, always remember the environment that you are in.? Also, remember that the threat does not have to be right behind you; there are a lot of binoculars in an arena setting!
While some of the security issues I observed before and during the game may or may not be likely security threats, be aware that security inside and outside your business must be an on-going endeavor.
